Houseplant of the Week: flaming sword

Flaming sword plant in two-tone pot

Why will I love it?
With its vibrant red flower, the flaming sword will bring a splash of tropical allure to any room. Its stunning flattened spike, reminiscent of a fiery blade, and long, curved leaves, adorned with brown bands, create a captivating rosette formation, evoking the rainforests of its native Trinidad, eastern Venezuela and Guyana.

Light or shade?
It prefers bright indirect light, similar to the sun’s rays diluted by the canopy in the rainforest.

Where should I put it?
Find a spot near a well-lit window, shielded from direct sunlight, allowing it to bask in a filtered glow.

How do I keep it alive?
Aim for a cosy room temperature between 21C and 27C year-round, ensuring it never dips below 10C. Embrace its tropical heritage by providing ample humidity: misting frequently or placing the pot atop a bed of wet pebbles will recreate the moist rainforest-like conditions it craves. Water thoroughly once the top inch of the soil feels dry to the touch – weekly in summer, less frequently in the winter.

Did you know …
The flaming sword flowers just once, typically when it’s two to three years old. Following this mesmerising display, it leaves behind pups, allowing you to propagate and extend the beauty of this remarkable plant.
