Homes Under The Hammer's Martin Roberts calls in paranormal experts to investigate his 'haunted' Welsh home

When you buy a beautiful Welsh home that is steeped in history and is one of the oldest houses in the area, you might be buying it with an added extra - sitting tenants from the past.

Not every historic house is haunted and the preferred place to call home for spirits and ghosts, but BBC TV's Homes Under The Hammer presenter Martin Roberts appears to have bought more than just a traditional Welsh farmhouse.

While undergoing some updates, the farmhouse that is said to be the oldest in the Rhondda valleys presented Martin with more than just a kitchen and bathroom to rip out, there were other elements of the past still inside - some of the former occupants?

When you have a potential paranormal problem, some people turn to paranormal groups to help solve the puzzle of the past and help the spirits 'move on'.

Martin turned to the team of experts from the popular discovery+ programme Help! My House is Haunted.

The trio of ghostbusters couldn't wait to come to Wales and find out more about Martin's characterful Rhondda farmhouse as an episode of the six-part series investigating celebrity haunted houses.

Past investigations at celeb's houses featured in this series include the homes of Alex Best, Charlotte Crosby, Joey Essex, Arron Crascall and Toyah Wilcox.

Martin said of his special connection with the house: "I saw this place about a year ago and I just walked in and I went 'I have to own this property!' This is a magical house.

"It's the oldest property that I've ever owned, and you think 1650 when it was built - this house has lived through so much history.

"Eventually we started the renovation work and we have a team of builders that I brought up here.

"The apprentice had to change bedrooms because he was trying to sleep in there and all sorts of things were going on - lights flickering on and off - he apparently vacated the room very quickly and thereafter refused to go back into that room."

Martin explains why he feels so connected to the house (Discovery+)

Martin has visited hundreds of houses across the UK in his job as presenter of BBC's popular daytime property programme, Homes Under The Hammer, so many might say he is 'in tune' with the ambience each property offers.

And his Welsh house definitely 'speaks' to him with its unique atmosphere.

Martin says: "I would say the house definitely has energy - I'm pretty convinced that there is a spirit here, and hopefully it knows that I'm its friend.

"I'm not about kicking out a spirit that's living here in peace and has got some history with the place - I'm a custodian of this place for a relatively short period of time but I am doing my bit while I'm here.

"I really hope the team can make any bad stuff realise this isn't a good place for it to be and make the good stuff - make them realise I'm here to help and that they are welcome to stay as long as they want."

The three members of the 'help' team, exorcist and medium Ian Lawman, paranormal researcher Jayne Harris, and paranormal consultant Barri Ghai, turn up at the Rhondda house to chat to Martin and potentially meet the ghosts that are said to reside there.

Ian wanders around the house alone and instantly picks up the presence of a female and also a boy that keeps looking back and smiling, as though he wants to play hide and seek.

A lady in a flowing dress, that Ian says looks like a grey lady, like a negative in a photograph, is another figure he encounters, as well as a gentleman sitting in an armchair.

Jayne meets with local historian and paranormal investigator Tracey Turner to try and find out some of the history of Martin's new house.

Tracey says the house dates back to 1652 and was in the ownership of the Edwards family for many generations.

The family history shows a number of tragedies, including one member of the family going to a walk on the mountain dying of exposure and Maria Edwards dying in a fire in a nearby farmhouse.

Tracey says Margaret was the last Edwards at the property in the mid 19th century and died in the house.

The local historian also says that the grey lady is seen quite regularly in the area and some think she is an omen of impending death.

In a newspaper article dated 1889 two gentlemen riding to the house, William Morgan and John Moses, both saw a grey figure that mysteriously disappeared.

Martin's builders, Harry and Mark, both think the house is haunted after having spent time staying at the property for weeks while renovating it.

Experiences include lights mysteriously turning off and on by themselves with no practical explanation plus random noises that include a metal clanging sound that freaked Harry out so much so he has never gone into that particular room again.

Ian is absorbed by the house and the spirits that he thinks inhabit it.

Ian says: "This property is amazing, the renovations that have occurred have disturbed so many things.

"There's a lady in grey who keeps scaring people and a little boy who likes to play hide and seek and a gentleman with a chest problem; this is going to be one intense investigation."

The equipment picks up a voice (Discovery+)

And so the paranormal team and Martin begin the evening's investigation, starting in the main lounge and immediately an EVP (electronic voice phenomenon) is picked up after Barri calls out to the spirits, and the voice says 'Martin'.

Martin is not phased though and calls out to the spirits himself and tells them that he is not going to cause the house any harm and he wants them to know that.

A voice answers 'yes' and Martin is very happy that the spirits have confirmed they know that he is here to help and they are very welcoming to him.

Into a bedroom that Ian suggests is one of the most haunted rooms in the house and suddenly Ian's satnav on his phone goes off even though it's on airplane mode and the maps function is not on.

Strange - and later in the night, this incident gets even stranger.

Martin uses the SLS camera (Discovery+)

Next the SLS camera comes out, which the team hand to Martin. This device is a structured light sensor camera system that can depict movement.

According to the Ghost Adventures Fandom website, the camera works through an infrared light projector with a monochrome CMOS sensor that shows everything as dots arranged in 3D formation.

These infrared dots allow the camera to show depth and detail - the software 'sees' people by recognising joints and movements not visible to the naked eye.

The SLS camera maps in a small figure that Martin thinks is a child playing hide and seek (Discovery+)

Ian calls out to the spirits again and the team are amazed when a figure immediately maps in on the SLS camera screen and then disappears a number of times.

Martin thinks it's like the ghost is playing hide and seek, so maybe this is one of the little boy spirits that Ian met earlier?

Martin then leaves the house and the team continue the ghost hunting through the night.

Strange satnav voice instructions begin to play in the bedroom (Discovery+)

They pick up a range of sounds, voices and Barri sees a shadow figure at the top of the stairs and feels something touch his foot.

Is it the two children, older gentleman or Margaret Edwards - who could also be the infamous grey lady?

Other unexplained experiences during the night include a conversation via a voice generating device that says 'leave us' and then 'Barri' and 'Martin'.

The team investigate the satnav instructions (Discovery+)

Plus Jayne takes an instant polaroid photo of a mist that wasn't seen with the naked eye that the team think contains the shape of a female figure in profile in Victorian clothes.

They also picked up the name Margaret, presumably Margaret Edwards, who the team think is happy to be at the house, who feels like she belongs at the property.

The team blesses the house (Discovery+)

The team blesses the house and Ian says a prayer to help any spirits who want to cross-over to the light to do so, but leaving the decision up to them.

And at the end of the night, when the team feedback to Martin they can see that he is emotionally and spiritually connected to the house, that he loves it and wants to help. They play Martin a spirit voice that says 'thank you'.

The team feed back their evidence to Martin (Discovery+)

The team also show him the extra activity they have documented, including the mysterious satnav directions that they decided to follow and that takes them to a particular road in the area; Margaret Street.

Martin then gets a little misty eyed.

Martin gets emotional when he realises the extra and most personal connection to the house (Discovery+)

And it's not hard to understand when he tells the group his much-loved mum's name who passed away about 20 years ago; Margaret.
