Grime and Punishment: The Cardiff workers who pick up filth, fly-tips and even sex workers' diaries for a living

Dan Allen and Wayne Jones are brilliantly chirpy, considering they dig through people's rubbish for a living.

In a new Channel 5 show, Grime and Punishment, the two Cardiff waste enforcement officers are followed as they uncover the things people illegally dump.

In the first episode we see them faced with a dangerous pile of rubbish at Devil's Ditch, an area which runs under the A48 near Pentwyn and Pontprennau.

It's a place the pair have previously cleaned, but this time the dumped rubbish has been set alight sending the smoke up over the dual carriageway, and the two men have to dig through the pile of burnt trash to find evidence of who might be responsible.

And from digging through the burnt-out delivery boxes, old lamps and an Amazon delivery bag, Dan and Wayne assess that the Devil's Ditch dumping is three loads from  the same fly tippers.

Dan - the 007 of Cardiff's waste enforcement team (it's his officer number) - comes across a diary in the load of rubbish which belongs to 'Sexy Carina' and is a 'kiss and tell' diary.

He reads out the first page, which says: "You'll notice my rates are not cheap, but as with most things in life you get what you pay for. A cheap woman is never good and a good woman is never cheap."

"This is definitely the diary of a lady of the night. This is diary of call girl, mate, that went for millions!"

But even though the Dumb and Dumber fans get frustrated by fly tipping.

Wayne said: "I get mixed emotions, I like it because I like the thrill of making sure we catch who did it. But then why do they do it? How can someone be so disrespectful or have no care for anyone or anything? Sometimes you have a couple of bags, a mattress in a field and could have 20-30tonnes dumped."

Before the show ends the pair are called to another disgusting fly-tip which is so big they have to get a JCB digger to help them move and sift through the junk which consists of doors, plasterboard and construction waste.

Tune into Channel 5 at 8pm tonight, Thursday, June 13, to see more from Dan and Wayne.
