Greater Manchester's latest Covid rates as cases remain high despite fall

The percentage of people testing positive for Covid-19 decreased in England, Wales, and Scotland, although rates remain high. Infections decreased in all English regions and age groups, except for in the North East, where the trend was uncertain in the latest week of figures available from the Office of National Statistics (ONS), ending July 20, 2022.

Overall hospital admission rates decreased in six out of nine regions in the week ending July 24, 2022. However, there is a delay between a person becoming infected with Covid-19 and being admitted to hospital or dying, so there are expected changes in overall hospital admissions to be observed later than changes to infection rates.

Coronavirus infection rates have fallen in all ten boroughs of Greater Manchester. Salford continues to have the highest coronavirus infection rate in Greater Manchester.

The borough recorded a rate of 171.3 cases per 100,000 people in the week ending July 23, according to the latest data from the UK Health Security Agency. The lowest infection rate is in Tameside, where the rate is 129.4 cases per 100,000 people.

In Greater Manchester as a whole, the infection rate is now 146.6 cases per 100,000 population. The infection rate in the region is lower than the national average, which is 164.7 cases per 100,000 people.

A total of 4,158 people tested positive for coronavirus across Greater Manchester in the week which ended on July 23. The Greater Manchester weekly total has decreased by 2540 cases compared to the previous week, which means the infection rate was down 38 per cent in the last week..

The infection rate is higher than the national average in two areas of Greater Manchester. It is lower than the national average in 8 areas.

More than a third (36 per cent) of adults wore face coverings when outside their home, according to the latest data from the Opinions and Lifestyle Survey collected by the ONS between 6 July and 17 July 2022.

Three-quarters (75 per cent) reported they always or often wash their hands with soap straight after returning home from a public place. Around 29 per cent said they always or often maintained social distancing when meeting up with people outside their household and 35 per cent avoided older or more vulnerable people.

Around 27 per cent of adults reported opening windows or doors to reduce the spread of coronavirus (Covid-19) and other illnesses when they have visitors in their home.

Average levels of life satisfaction remained at 7.0, while levels of anxiety went from 3.8 to 3.9 and levels of happiness went from 7.2 to 7.1.

Hospital admissions

In the week ending on July 24, a total of 650 patients were admitted to Greater Manchester NHS hospitals with Covid-19. That is 51 fewer than the week before, a fall of 9 per cent.

On Tuesday July 26, there were 24 Mechanical Ventilation (MV) beds occupied by Covid patients in Greater Manchester NHS hospitals. That is nine more than a week earlier.

This is the most recent available data for hospital admissions, the figures for NHS trusts are not updated daily.

Deaths

In the week ending July 23, a total of 60 people died within 28 days of a positive Covid test across Greater Manchester, which is 13 more than the week before.

Since the start of the pandemic, there have been a total of 1,033,547 confirmed coronavirus cases in Greater Manchester. There has been a total of 9,616 deaths.

Cases reported in each of the ten boroughs

Oldham is an area where the trend is down. The latest infection rate here is 130.0 cases per 100,000 people.

There were 309 cases recorded in Oldham, which is 143 fewer than the previous week - a fall of 32 per cent.

Rochdale saw a total of 313 cases in the week ending July 23, which is 121 fewer than the previous week. That is a fall of 28 per cent.

In Rochdale, the most recent coronavirus infection rate is now 139.9 cases per 100,000 people.

Stockport recorded 444 coronavirus cases, which is 368 fewer than in the previous seven days.

The latest infection rate in Stockport is 150.9 cases per 100,000 people and that is down 45 per cent week-on-week.

There was a fall of 47 per cent in cases in Bury over the week ending July 23, and the infection rate is now 136.9 cases per 100,000 population.

Bury recorded 261 positive Covid-19 tests over the seven-day period, and that is 229 fewer than the previous week.

In Wigan, the latest infection rate is 155.7 cases per 100,000 people and the number of cases has gone down by 37 per cent.

A total of 515 people tested positive for Covid in Wigan over the seven days ending on July 23, which is 303 fewer than the week before.

In Salford, there were 450 positive Covid-19 tests in the week ending July 23, which is 175 fewer than the previous 7 days.

Salford has the highest infection rate in the region. The infection rate in Salford is down slightly compared with the previous day and the week-on-week trend is down by 28 per cent.

There were 398 positive tests over the last week in Trafford, which is 199 fewer than in the previous week.

The week-on-week trend in Trafford is down by 33 per cent and the latest infection rate is 167.5 cases per 100,000 people.

The trend is down in Bolton, where there were 419 positive Covid-19 tests in the week ending July 23, which is 310 fewer than the previous 7 days. That is down by 43 per cent compared to the previous week.

The latest infection rate in Bolton is 145.4 cases per 100,000 people, which is lower than the national average.

In Manchester, the number of cases is down by 38 per cent compared to the previous week - leaving the infection rate at 135.9 cases per 100,000 population.

There were 755 positive Covid-19 tests in Manchester in the week ending July 23, which was 457 fewer than the previous 7 days.

Tameside, which has the lowest infection rate in the region, recorded 294 positive Covid-19 tests in the week ending July 23, which is 235 fewer than the previous 7 days.

The coronavirus infection rate in Tameside is now 129.4 cases per 100,000 people and is down by 44 per cent week-on-week.
