NBA athletes are absolutely some of most phenomenal athletes in the world. For those dudes to be that big moving around the way that they do? Man, it’s pretty incredible.
But, uh, sometimes you’re literally not supposed to move around like that.
Celtics’ forward Grant Williams found out the hard way the Zion Williamson way when his new Air Jordan 37 sneaker literally ripped in half while he was making a move against the Raptors.
He had the ball on the fastbreak against the Raptors and decided to attempt to go for a layup. His shoe decided against that for him, though. His foot plowed right through.

That is wild. You don’t often see that happen with sneakers — it takes a lot of force to just rip through these things. But here we are. Williams’ foot literally broke through the midsole of his new Jordan 37 — the latest flagship sneaker of Michael Jordan’s signature basketball line.
If we’re looking for answers to why this may have happened, the easy one is that Grant Williams is just a forceful dude. He’s a 6’6, 235-pound forward flying down the court in transition. But this happens a lot in the NBA. It’s something these shoes were made for. So there’s got to be another answer here.
And that answer might be…he was actually wearing the shoes wrong. ESPN’s Nick DePaula shared this picture of Williams wearing the shoes last week laced incorrectly with his tongue bunching up in the middle of the game.
This pic is from a week ago — Grant Williams didn’t seem to be lacing his AJ 37s correctly and had the tongue bunching and slipping down mid-game. 🧐🤔 pic.twitter.com/jzrBoyvc05

That could easily impact how well the foot is locked into the shoe. If it’s not secure, there’s a chance that it could potentially break through.
That’s still wild though. Luckily, Williams isn’t hurt like Zion was after his shoe exploded. This could’ve ended much worse. But it’s definitely something Jordan Brand will need to sure up with the 37 to make sure this won’t happen again.
Fans were shocked by this.
