Google parent company Alphabet has told staff 12,000 jobs are set to be eliminated worldwide.
The new job cuts in the tech sector follow Microsoft announcing it would lay off 10,000 workers worldwide. The Google job cuts will affect teams across the company including recruiting, some corporate functions, engineering and product teams.
The cuts are global and will impact US staff immediately, Google said. There are 5,000 people employed by Google in Dublin.

It is unclear what impact the announcement will have on the Irish jobs yet. The announcement comes amid uncertainty in the tech industry.
Job losses were also previously announced in Stripe, Twitter, Meta and Amazon. Alphabet's CEO Sundar Pichai said in the note: "I am confident about the huge opportunity in front of us thanks to the strength of our mission, the value of our products and services, and our early investments in AI."
