Glasgow man finds unusual looking 'exotic' spider at Partick children's park

We don't mean to alarm anyone but another strange-looking spider has been discovered in Glasgow just weeks after an exotic-looking creepy crawly was seen in the south side.

Chris Whitelaw spotted the unusual-looking creature while at Thornwood Park in Partick. A quick Google search had led him to believe it could be an Araneus gemmoides, commonly known as the jewel spider and cat-faced spider.

The species, most commonly found in Canada and the USA, was discovered on a slide at the park 'basking in the sun'. It stood out due to its unusual shape and colour with Chris's kids nicknaming it 'Whitey'.

We previously told how a shocked southsider came across a giant exotic spider on a busy road while on a night out.

Alex McLeod told us she initially thought it was a crab but on further inspection realised it was definitely of the arachnid variety.

She described it as 'missing a few legs and barely moving'.

The Scottish SPCA was unable to confirm what species of spider it was but urged anyone who comes across a spider that they believe to be an escaped pet or exotic species, they should contact their helpline.

Scottish SPCA chief superintendent, Mike Flynn, said, “If anyone comes across a spider that they are concerned is an escaped pet or an exotic species they should call our animal helpline on 03000 999 999.”

We don't know what's going on but we sure hope this is the last unusual spider sighting that comes across our radar for a while...
