Girvan lighthouse enjoys neon makeover to celebrate launch of Hendrick's Gin sea-inspired spirit

Girvan harbour's lighthouse has had a neon nautical makeover to celebrate the launch of locally-distilled Hendrick’s Gin’s new beverage.

Hendrick’s ‘Neptunia Gin’ is the latest creation from master distiller Lesley Gracie who was inspired to concoct the sea-inspired spirit while on coastal walks with her dog.

Lesley wanted to bottle the ‘freeing feeling’ she felt and share the essence of the rugged Ayrshire shores with others.

And to celebrate the launch of the limited-edition tipple, the gin brand has transformed three iconic lighthouses across the UK, including Girvan – the home of Hendrick’s Gin – which now dons a playful octopus as part of the grand design dubbed ‘The Haven’.

Joining Girvan harbour in shining a light on UK coastlines is Belle Tout in East Sussex and Bidston Lighthouse on The Wirral.

The landmark lighthouses have been given their wonderfully unique and colourful designs by British artist Claire Luxton who was inspired by the history and landscape of each lighthouse and its local area.

Girvan harbour lighthouse was commissioned in 1890 as a safe anchorage for the South Ayrshire coast.

It features two distinctively emerald lights which called out to safely bring home the fisherman that frequented the town.

The town’s lighthouse now boasts ‘The Haven’ with a neon design illustrating treasures from the ocean.

Artist Claire said: “My practice has always had a deep connection to the ocean and nature, with its mystery something I have always been intrigued by.

“Living in East Sussex, it’s a joy to find such beauty in the raw, unfiltered shorelines that fill me with inspiration.

“Working on this project with Hendrick’s Gin was such a special experience and felt really meaningful to bring home how much we take our coastline for granted.”

James Keen, senior brand manager at William Grant & Sons UK, said: “At Hendrick’s Gin, we aim to inspire the curious to seek out the unconventional – and what better way to celebrate the launch of Hendrick’s Neptunia Gin and the beauty of our coastlines that inspired the delicious liquid, than with stunning, intriguing art installations across the UK’s iconic lighthouses.”

The artwork will be live for residents and passers-by to enjoy until the end of April.
