Girl, 10, catches record 8ft alligator fish just 10 minutes into fishing trip with dad

A 10-year-old girl has caught a record-breaking 8ft-long alligator fish.

Emily Myers and dad, Paul, from Houston in US, made the eye-watering catch on September 25 after reeling in a huge alligator gar.

With a little of bit of assistance from her dad to help place the bait on the hook, Emily reeled in the fish using tilapia.

But just after 10 minutes into their fishing trip, the pair soon had a bite and Emily went about striking the rod as Paul helped her get into position.

An enormous alligator gar was hooked on and measured 8ft 2ins - which would've broken the current junior record of 7.75ft, set in 2007.

A proud dad told Houston Chronicle : "I taught her. She knew exactly what to use. She knew the exact spot where the fish would hit. She had it all down to a science."

She previously had posed with another fish she had caught - a picture shows her lying on the ground next to it.

After weighing and taking pictures with the fish, the dad and daughter were confronted with a difficult decision.

The strange looking fish was caught thanks a little help from Paul (Paul Myers)

Were they to take the fish to get certified via state-scales, the fish could have died in transportation which was a risk neither of them wanted to take.

Dad Paul said: "I told Emily, 'I know what I would do, but the decision is up to you. She wanted to release the fish."

The budding fisherman, who has been angling since she was 3, is aiming to catch a 100-pound blue catfish or an 80-pound flathead catfish on her next trip.

The pair refused to let other anglers know where they found their thumping catch (Paul Myers)

Paul said: "Since Emily's been age 3, she's been going fishing with me, and she has caught everything from trout and salmon up north, to a 10-foot bull shark, to now a huge alligator gar."

"I love to fish and I've always been really good at it, and I've been able to pass that on to Emily."

The young girl is not afraid to touch bait, get her hands mucky with the fish and loves to cast.

He proudly added: "Emily is better than any boy could have been."
