Stores ranging from Greggs to McDonald's will be closed today to mark the funeral of Queen Elizabeth II.
King Charles III has approved a new bank holiday for his late mother Queen Elizabeth II’s funeral.
But it is down to retailers whether they close or not.
A full list of everything open during the day is slowly being confirmed as stores and organisations announce their plans.
A Government statement said: “Monday 19 September, the date of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II’s State Funeral, will be a national bank holiday.
"“This will allow individuals, businesses and other organisations to pay their respects to Her Majesty and commemorate Her reign, while marking the final day of the period of national mourning."
Will supermarkets be open during the Queen’s funeral?
Supermarket chains can vary on bank holidays for opening times, but some have announced they are closing their doors during the Queen’s funeral.
Supermarkets Sainsbury's, M&S, Asda, Tesco, Waitrose and Morrisons are set to shut next week to mark the funeral of Queen Elizabeth II.
Asda
Asda said it will shut all its stores until 5pm on the day to allow employees to watch the funeral.
An Asda spokesman said: "As a mark of respect for Her Majesty The Queen, all Asda stores will be closed on Monday September 19 until 5pm to allow our customers and colleagues to recognise the passing of our late monarch and commemorate her steadfast service to our nation."
Asda will not be offering online deliveries on September 19.
The spokesperson added: "All our stores will close by midnight on Sunday September 18 and reopen at 5pm on Monday September 19."
Tesco
Large Tesco supermarkets will close all day, and smaller Express stores will shut until 5pm.
Tesco UK chief executive John Tarry said: "We want to express our deepest condolences to the Royal Family, as well as our gratitude to Her Majesty The Queen for her unwavering service."
Tesco convenience stores and petrol stations will open 5pm to 10pm.
Sainsbury's
Sainsbury's will close all its supermarkets and Argos stores on the day of the funeral.
It will also pause its online shopping options.
Smaller Sainsbury's and its petrol forecourts will open from 5pm to 10pm.
A Sainsbury’s spokesperson said: “We are deeply saddened by the passing of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II.
"Our convenience stores and petrol filling stations will be open from 5pm-10pm to allow our customers to pick up essential items, while select stores in central London will open to serve those attending the funeral in person. We thank our customers for their understanding.”
Waitrose
A spokesperson for the John Lewis Partnership, which runs Waitrose and John Lewis, said both brands will shut their doors for the day of the Queen's funeral.
The spokesperson added: "When full details of the funeral are confirmed, an exception may be a very limited number of Waitrose stores on the route of the funeral procession to serve members of the public who we know will be lining the route for many hours.
"These shops will, however, close for the funeral itself."
M&S
M&S said it will close its stores and halt deliveries to customers on Monday September 19.
Stuart Machin, chief executive at M&S, said: "All of us at M&S - and indeed across the country and beyond - feel a real and deep sense of loss and sadness at the passing of Her Majesty, as well as huge respect for the grace with which His Majesty King Charles III and the wider royal family have led the nation in our mourning.
"It is right that we make changes to our operational arrangements on the day of the funeral to ensure our colleagues across our stores and distribution network can participate, whilst supporting customers as they show their respects too."
He added there will be "limited exceptions in London and Windsor", where M&S will serve customers paying their respects to the Queen.
Morrisons
Morrisons is the latest chain to confirm closures across the UK on Monday, September 19.
In a statement, a spokesperson said: "All our supermarkets will be closed on Monday September 19 as a mark of respect and so colleagues can pay tribute to Her Majesty," a spokeswoman for the supermarket said.
"At 5pm our petrol filling stations will reopen."
Lidl
Lidl has also confirmed it will be shutting its shops around the UK on the bank holiday.
Stores will return to normal hours on Tuesday, September 20.
Co-op
The Co-op will close all its stores on Monday, September 19 until 5pm.
Once the funeral is over, the shops will reopen following the service.
However, a number of shops will remain open throughout the day in central London to serve customers that are in the city for the state funeral.
Will other shops be open during the Queen's funeral?
Homebase, WH Smith, B&Q, Primark, Argos, Poundland and John Lewis have all said they will be shutting on the day of the late monarch's funeral.
B&Q
B&Q said it would close all its UK stores "as a mark of respect" on the day of the Queen's funeral.
It said the decision would also offer its staff "the opportunity to pay their respects". Click and collect and home delivery services will also be temporarily suspended on the day, B&Q added.
Argos
Argos, which is owned by Sainsbury's, will be closed for the day.
A Sainsbury's spokesperson said: “We are deeply saddened by the passing of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II. In honour of Her Majesty and so our colleagues can pay their respects, all Sainsbury’s supermarkets and Argos stores will be closed on Monday, September 19.
"This includes Groceries Online and Argos Fast Track delivery. Our convenience stores and petrol filling stations will be open from 5pm to 10pm to allow our customers to pick up essential items, while select stores in central London will open to serve those attending the funeral in person.
"We thank our customers for their understanding.”
Homebase
Homebase said: "We join the country in mourning the passing of HM Queen Elizabeth II and will be closing our stores on the day of her funeral."
Ikea
An Ikea UK spokesperson said: "Out of respect, and to enable our co-workers to participate in the funeral, Ikea UK will pause its business operations, including closing all of our UK stores on Monday 19 September."
Greggs
On Twitter, Greggs said: "To give our colleagues the opportunity to pay their respects to Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II, Greggs shops will be closed on Monday 19th September."
Poundland
Poundland confirmed all 770 stores will be shut on Monday - with colleagues who were scheduled to work on 19 September set receive their scheduled pay in full.
Primark
Primark has also confirmed it will close all 191 stores on the bank holiday to honour the Queen.
A spokesperson said: "Our stores, depots and Head Office in the UK will be closed on Monday 19th September to give our colleagues the opportunity to pay their respects and watch the funeral of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II.
"We will reopen as normal on Tuesday."
Next
Next has confirmed all its stored will be closed for the bank holiday.
A spokesperson from Next said: “In honour of Her Majesty and so our colleagues can pay their respects, all stores will be closed on Monday, 19 September.”
Joules
Joules has also confirmed that it will be closed on the bank holiday.
It will return to normal service on Tuesday, September 20.
WH Smith
All of WH Smith's high street branches will be shut for the day of the funeral.
The firm's smaller Travel stores will close for at least the funeral itself.
Dunelm
Dunelm has confirmed it will be closed for the bank holiday.
A spokesperson for the chain said: "On Monday 19th September and as a mark of our respect, we will be closing all Dunelm stores and pausing delivery, Click & Collect and customer services on the day of the Funeral.
"We will reopen on Tuesday 20th September."
Blue Diamond Garden Centres
Blue Dragon Garden Centres will also be closed for the day but will return to normal business hours on Tuesday, September 20.
Harrods
Harrods will be shut during the Queen's funeral.
A spokesman for Harrods told Drapers: "Harrods stands with the entire nation in grief on the passing of Her Majesty the Queen.
"Her Majesty stood as a symbol of Britain, bringing comfort, leadership and steadfastness to millions over her 70 year reign. On behalf of Harrods and our employees, we send our deepest condolences to the Royal Family and are united in remembrance of Her Majesty and her life dedicated to public service.
"We will continue to commemorate the life of Her Majesty the Queen and pay our respects by closing the store on the day of the State Funeral."
Selfridges
Selfridges has also confirmed that it will be closed on the bank holiday.
It will return to normal service on Tuesday, September 20.
Currys
Currys has announced that all its UK stores will be closed on the bank holiday.
There will not be any deliveries either, allowing staff to mourn during the funeral.
Wilko
Wilko has also confirmed that it will be closed on the bank holiday.
It will return to normal service on Tuesday, September 20.
Costa Coffee
More than 2,000 Costa Coffee shops cafes will be closed during the bank holiday, with some minor exceptions.
For example, any stores that are located inside a hospital will remain open.
The chain also explained that all its Express machines will remain open in the stores that haven't also closed their doors.
Zara
Zara has confirmed it will close its 60 stores for the entirety of the bank holiday.
It will resume normal service the following day, Tuesday, September 20.
Kwik Fit
Kwik Fit normally remains open during bank holidays, though that will not be the case this time.
The organisation has made an exception for the Queen's funeral due to the "unique circumstances" of the day.
Roger Griggs, communications director at Kwik Fit, said: “Following the declaration of a bank holiday to mark the state funeral of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II, Kwik Fit centres will be closed on Monday 19 September.
"While we usually remain open on most bank holidays, these are unique circumstances.
"We are closing to enable all our colleagues to join their family and friends in paying their final respects as Her Majesty is laid to rest.
"We understand that many customers will be doing the same and hope that this decision does not cause inconvenience.
"We will reopen with normal operations on Tuesday 20 September.”
Toolstation
Toolstation has confirmed it will be closed for the entirety of the bank holiday.
It will resume normal service the following day, Tuesday, September 20.
Pets at Home
Pets at Home has announced that all its UK stores will be closed on the bank holiday.
Once again, it will return to its regular hours and service the following day.
Waterstones
All Waterstones stores will be closed during the bank holiday.
They will return to their normal hours on Tuesday, September 20.
Holland & Barrett
Holland & Barrett has confirmed all its stores will be closed during the bank holiday.
They will return to their normal operating hours on Tuesday, September 20.
B&M
All B&M stores across the UK will be closed during the bank holiday.
A spokesperson for B&M said: "As a mark of respect, all B&M Stores across the UK will be closed on Monday 19th September to commemorate the passing of our late monarch."
Home Bargains
Home Bargains has confirmed that all its stores will be closed for the Queen's funeral.
Confirming the news on social media, the chain wrote: "As the country comes together to pay tribute and remember Queen Elizabeth II, all Home Bargains stores will close on Monday 19th September to allow our customers and colleagues to pay their respects to Her Majesty the Queen."
McDonald's UK
McDonald's has confirmed that all its restaurants will be closed on Monday, September 19, until 5pm, "to allow everyone at McDonald’s to pay their respects to Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II."
Operating hours will return to normal after 5pm that day.
Amazon
Amazon warehouses will be working as normal, though deliveries will be stopped in the morning.
Amazon said it will observe the bank holiday with “all UK employees being offered additional holiday”.
Greggs
Greggs will also be closed during the bank holiday.
The chain tweeted: "To give our colleagues the opportunity to pay their respects to Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II, Greggs shops will be closed on Monday 19th September.
"A small number of our shops, operated by our franchise partners, may remain open. Thanks for your understanding."
Will tourist attractions be open during the Queen's funeral?
Most tourist attractions will close their doors during the Queen's funeral out of respect for the monarchy.
English Heritage
English Heritage has confirmed that heritage sites across the UK, including Stone Henge and HMS Belfast, will be shut for visitors.
English Heritage said in a statement: "As a mark of respect, English Heritage is closing all sites on Monday September 19 2022 for Her Majesty the Queen's state funeral."
National Trust
The National Trust has also announced that houses, gardens, cafes and shops will all be closed on Monday, September 19.
However, the organisation said coast and countryside car parks, along with holiday cottages and campsites that are already booked, will remain open for visitors.
The National Trust said: "National Trust places will remain open during the mourning period to provide a place of reflection for members and visitors."
Centre Parcs
Popular holiday destination Centre Parcs initially confirmed it would close all five of its sites across the UK on the bank holiday.
In a statement, a spokesperson said it had made the decision "as a mark of respect and to allow as many of our colleagues as possible to be part of this historic moment".
However, the company has now backtracked on the decision, saying that it will no longer require guests who are not due to depart on Monday to leave.
Yet, those due to arrive on Monday will still not be able to check in until 10am on Tuesday September 20.
In a statement on Tuesday evening, it said: "The vast majority of our guests are either due to arrive or depart on Monday 19 September.
"We have however, reviewed our position regarding the very small number of guests who are not due to depart on Monday, and we will be allowing them to stay on our villages rather than having to leave and return on Tuesday."
Museums and galleries
Museums will be shutting their doors for the bank holiday, including the Natural History Museum, Science Museum and the V&A in South Kensington, London.
As for galleries, sites such as the National Gallery in London, National Galleries of Scotland and the Tate will all be closed during the bank holiday.
Will pubs be open during the Queen’s funeral?
Most hospitality industries stay open on bank holidays.
No pub chains have confirmed any closures so far.
The Stonegate Group, which has more than 4,000 pubs, will remain open with plans to show the funeral.
Fullers Group, which has over 400 pubs across the country, said: “Pubs are an integral part of the community and we expect the majority of our pubs to be open to join with their communities and celebrate the life of an amazing and inspirational leader.”
Greene King said last night it was still finalising plans for Monday.
JD Wetherspoon has announced that most of its pubs will be closed during the funeral, but will open from around 1pm on September 19.
However, it said its central London, railway station and airport pubs will all remain open as the Queen’s funeral takes place.
A spokesman for the company said: “Pub company Wetherspoon is opening its pubs in central London, rail stations and airports and all of its hotels (hotels will be open for resident guests only) during normal trading hours from 8am until midnight on Monday September 19.
“The majority of its pubs will open later than usual, after the state funeral, at approximately 1pm and will remain open during normal trading hours after that.”
Wetherspoons are going one step further, as they have announced discount prices on Thursday, September 15.
For local, independent pubs, it will be up to the individual landlords to open up, so it is best checking with them before heading out on the bank holiday.
Will hospitals be open during the bank holiday?
The NHS has issued a warning that "non-urgent" appointments may be rescheduled during the bank holiday.
It comes as thousands of hospital and GP appointments scheduled for the day of the Queen's funeral are being postponed in England.
GPs received a notice from NHS England explaining that they can choose to close their doors for the funeral.
Hospital trusts can also make their own decisions on whether to close for the day.
However, health officials were told to ensure there was “sufficient” out-of-hours cover and for scheduled Covid booster care home visits, ensuring they will be carried out as planned.
Will workplaces be open during the bank holiday?
Each workplace can decide to open up or not during the bank holiday, so you will need to check with your employer.
The Government has provided guidance for employers and employees for what to do on bank holidays.
It states: “This is a matter for discussion between individuals and their employer. There is no statutory entitlement to time off for bank holidays, but employers may include bank holidays as part of a worker’s leave entitlement.
“The Government cannot interfere in existing contractual arrangements between employers and workers.
“However, we would expect that many workers will be able to take the day off on the bank holiday.
“We also expect employers to respond sensitively to requests from workers who wish to take the day of the funeral off work.”
Will schools be open during the Queen’s funeral?
Schools have been confirmed to be closed during the bank holiday.
Headteachers across the country were waiting for news on whether to open their doors on September 19 following the Queen’s death, and the King finally confirmed they can keep them closed.
Schools, colleges and universities will all be closed to business on that date.
Are cinemas open during the bank holiday?
Many cinemas will be shut during the Queen's funeral, including Odeon.
A spokesperson for the chain said: “As a mark of respect for Queen Elizabeth II all Odeon cinemas in the UK & Northern Ireland will be closed on Monday 19th September. We will re-open again on Tuesday 20th September.”
Cineworld, which owns Picturehouse, will also be closed for the day, with a spokesperson explaining: "Out of respect to HM Queen Elizabeth II and the Royal Family, all of our UK cinemas will be closed on Monday September 19, the day of the state funeral.
"Those who have made bookings for this day will be contacted shortly.”
The BFI is closing all its venues as well, including its flagship Southbank location in London and the Imax at Waterloo.
Other chains to confirm closures include Showcase and The Light.
However, cinema chains including Vue, Curzon, Reel Cinemas, Savoy, Arc and Picturedrome will screen the funeral of Queen Elizabeth II for free on Monday, September 19 - around 150 venues.
Curzon Cinemas will show the funeral in its 16 venues during the day; and will resume its normal programming of films in the evening.
Will shopping malls be open during the bank holiday?
Many shopping centres will be operating under typical bank holiday hours during the Queen's funeral.
Shopping malls such as Westfield London and Stratford, the Trafford Centre in Manchester, the Bullring in Birmingham, Meadowhall in Sheffield and Bluewater in Kent are likely to keep bank holiday opening hours.
However, some like the Bullring and Brent Cross in North West London are planning on coming to a standstill to screen the funeral.
Are gyms open during the bank holiday?
Most gyms will be operating under different hours during the Queen's state funeral.
Pure Gym has confirmed that it will be closed from 10am to 2pm on Monday.
The Gym Group will also be shut between 10am and 2pm, with JD Gyms confirming it will be closed during the same set of hours.
Virgin Active will close all of their central London sites but their other venues across the country will open after 2pm until 8pm.
For independent gyms, it will be up to them if they decide to close or not, so it is best calling yours beforehand to find out.
