Flood-hit village Boris Johnson promised to 'get done' 2 years ago is underwater again

Boris Johnson was branded "as dishonest as the day is long" after a town he personally pledged permanent flood defences to was again underwater

The Prime Minister vowed to "get Bewdley done" when he visited the Worcestershire parish in March 2020, pledging to make the area's flood guarding permanent.

Residents angry at the time about their flood-ravaged homes shouted "do your job" at Mr Johnson and the PM promised he would look at "what permanent defences we can put in".

He said: "The case we need to make is, it's not just the number of households, it's also the economic damage, it's the damage to confidence, all the rest of it in the town."

But in 2021, Defra announced £6.2m to "replace temporary flood barriers and better protect" homes and the Government is still 'currently assessing technical options' for permanent barriers, with work not likely to start until 2023.

The town has been flooded twice since the PM visited Bewdley almost two years ago, with the triple threat of Storms Dudley, Eunice, and Franklin this week causing the River Severn to swell.

The Environment Agency installed temporary barriers over the weekend at the town's at-risk Beales Corner in a bid to help protect nearby properties from Storm Franklin.

Flood barriers were breached late on Monday amid "biblical" storms.

Jo Bloom, leader of Bewdley Flood Group, which was set up in 2007, said the weather had battered the town.

"It's a flood of biblical proportions," she told the Express and Star. "We're nowhere near the peak. We're not out of the woods yet because there's a bulge of water to come."

One source told the Mirror: "Not sure if the Prime Minister will come back to Bewdley."

And now following a series of storms, the town has once again been deluged, with the River Severn swelling and causing yet more damage.

Labour's Shadow Environment Secretary Jim McMahon, said: “We know the Prime Minister is as dishonest as the day is long, so lying to the people of Bewdley is yet another unsurprising dereliction of duty to add to the long list.

"He’s not interested in making a difference to our communities, only in saving his own skin."

The Midlands town, which is close to Kidderminster, has a long history of flooding.

The Government declined to comment, but it is understood chiefs are 'currently assessing technical options' for permanent barriers with work not likely to start until 2023.
