The creator of the original Flappy Bird game posted on social media that he does not support the recent plans for a re-release that is supposedly backed by a crypto firm.
Dong Nguyen tweeted that he had no relation to the game that was just announced, adding that he did not sell anything and that he does not support cryptocurrency. The original Flappy Bird was released in May 2013 for iOS devices.
Flappy Bird Re-release
The game immediately soared in popularity among players and became a global hit despite its relatively simple gameplay. It quickly became the most downloaded app on the App Store and earned Nguyen tens of thousands of ad revenue every day.
However, Flappy Bird was later pulled from the App Store and has been unavailable for download in its original form for more than a decade. A team of fans calling itself the Flappy Bird Foundation acquired the official trademark, according to the VideoGamesChronicle.
The group reportedly also acquired the rights to Piou Piou vs Cactus, which is a mobile game that some people claim was a copied version of Flappy Bird.
The team acquired the rights to Nguyen's game from Gametech Holdings. The latter registered the trademark after the creator failed to renew it.
It was found that Flappy Bird Foundation is led by designer Michael Roberts who was found to be the head of 1208 Productions. The latter is a crypto firm that describes itself as "pioneering Web 3.0."
Additionally, some fans pointed out that 1208 Productions is behind GLP, which is said to be one of Web 3.0's largest game publishing platforms. The recent announcement revealed that the Flappy Bird re-release will come out in 2025 for both iOS and Android devices.
Backed by Crypto Firm
Despite Nguyen's criticism and desperate attempt to separate himself from the re-release, he did not disprove its legitimacy.
The team behind the upcoming re-release describes itself as a "new team of passionate fans committed to sharing the game with the world," said TechCrunch.
Fans dug through data and files and discovered that the re-release features some new additions to the original. These include different birds, loot boxes, as well as the idea of some sort of crypto involvement.
A page on the official website said that the legendary Flappy Bird game is back and will be flying higher than ever before.
It was noted that it would be on Solana and would be soaring into Web 3.0. It added that artists, developers, and creators will be able to build, play, and earn from the game, according to Forbes.
