Five cats make an Asda store their home after they stroll in and get comfortable

Five cats have made an Asda store their home after they strolled into the shop and made themselves comfortable.

The supermarket now has a different kind of visitor that has appeared over the last year. Regular shoppers are familiar with the sight of several cats settling down in the shop foyer at the store in Pwllheli, Wales.

Several months ago the unusual scenario started when one cat routinely started visiting the store. As reported by NorthWalesLive, bemused customers posted on local Facebook groups, unsure whether or not the white-and-tortoise-shell-coloured cat was a stray.

However, her owner reassured the concerned customer that she just enjoyed visiting the shop and was very much loved and fed at home. Staff tried hard to discourage the pet from hanging around, but it actually invited its friends round rather than leaving and never coming back.

It's understood there are now at least five different cats who sit in the foyer almost on a daily basis and they visit the branch so much staff have now been forced to put up signs asking their customers not to feed them.

Ciara Faulkner, ambient manager at the supermarket, said: "We try to encourage our customers not to feed them but obviously we can't monitor the situation constantly. We've tried ushering them out but they always come back.

"When the first cat started coming we did contact Freshfields and they came out to check but the cat did have an owner and was looked after. There's only so much we can do to prevent it and then it started bringing its mates too!

"We have had one or two customers who aren't very happy, but most people think it's cute. They just sleep there really, they're not causing any harm. At one time, one of the cats would actually come into the store and walk down the aisles but we kept putting it back out, I think it's got the hint now. Another one used to go round the back and through the warehouse and go upstairs."

It's not the first time a supermarket in the area has proven to be popular with cats. An eight-year-old tabby named Brutus shot to fame because of his antics at a Morrisons store, where he would prowl around for hours.
