Ferguson 'hopeful' of McGregor Rangers contract extension as he reveals chats with ex-team-mate

Ferguson 'hopeful' of McGregor Rangers contract extension as he reveals chats with ex-team-mate

BARRY FERGUSON admits he's none the wiser over Allan McGregor's Rangers contract situation - depsite trying to get an answer from his former team-mate.

McGregor, 40, came on for the final minutes in the Scottish Cup final last week in a move mooted as a potential farewell appearance.

However, the veteran keeper insisted nothing has been decided after the match as he insisted talks between himself and the club will be held.

Now, Ferguson has told of his conversations with McGregor, who he reckons has still got the ability to play at a high level.

But Ferguson wasn't able to find out what McGregor's plans are as he grilled his fellow Ibrox hero on whether he'd stay on for next season.

Speaking on the Go Radio Football Show, Ferguson said: "I'm 50-50. I would love him to stay and I still think he's got it in him to play, I still think he's a top goalkeeper.

"Allan will make the decision himself and I think everybody will respect that.

"I think he mentioned he's going to take a bit of time out for a week or two and go on holiday with the family, and then he'll make his decision.

"But I'm hopeful he'll stay on another year. If you're asking my opinion, I honestly don't know. I tried to get it out of him!

"He's a man of few words. Whatever he decides to do, you've got to respect it because he's the best goalkeeper I played with and I played with some unbelievable goalkeepers in my time.

"I just think the last three years, for Rangers to go and sign him on a free transfer was unbelievable business.

"I knew him as a young boy, 15-years-old, and I could tell straight away that this guy had a massive future in the game."
