A ship crash that resulted in the destruction of the Baltimore Key Bridge and claimed the lives of several individuals is now the subject of a federal criminal investigation, as confirmed by a US official with knowledge of the situation.
The FBI and the US Coast Guard have taken the lead in the criminal probe to determine the circumstances surrounding the disaster. One aspect being scrutinized is whether the ship's crew failed to report a prior issue with the vessel that caused a delay in its departure.
The tragic incident occurred around 1:30 a.m. on March 26 when a large cargo ship named the Dali lost power and collided with the Francis Scott Key Bridge. As a result of the collision, six construction workers who were working on repairing potholes on the bridge fell into the Patapsco River and tragically lost their lives.
The National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) has also been actively investigating the causes of the disaster. The focus of the NTSB's inquiry has been on the equipment in the ship's engine room, as stated by the agency last week.
