A community in central-west New South Wales is in mourning following the death of a toddler in a dog attack.
Two-year-old Jyedon Pollard was staying with his mother at a motel in Cowra when he was attacked by two dogs on Tuesday morning.
Chifley police superintendent Bob Noble said there were no direct witnesses to the attack as it happened at the rear of the motel.
"The two dogs were secured in a yard and what led to the attack will be investigated," Superintendent Noble said.
"It is an extremely unfortunate set of circumstances that led to this tragedy and it was a super-human effort to try to save his life."
Mr Noble said the owner of the motel found the boy and took him immediately to hospital.
"Everyone is devastated, when a child so young dies in such terrible fashion, it's upsetting to a lot of people."
The boy was transported by helicopter from Cowra to Westmead Hospital in Sydney where he died late Tuesday afternoon while in surgery.
Community mourns
Cowra mayor Bill West said the tragic situation has left everyone in the small community feeling numb.
"The whole community offers our support to the boy's family during what is a terrible shock," Mr West said.
He said the community and first responders will need support to overcome the tragedy.
"This affects everyone in the town in some way, and we're going to have to come together to support each other," Mr West said.
"A number of people, including first responders, would have been involved in this tragedy and they will also need support."
Cowra Council seized two dogs from the scene and euthanased them on Wednesday.
A report will be prepared for the coroner.
