Exact date 1.1million people will start to get first half of £650 cost of living payment

Around 1.1 million households on Tax Credits will get the first half of the £650 cost of living payment from September 2.

Payments are expected to be made by September 7, HM Revenue and Customs (HMRC) confirmed.

In April, the Government unveiled a £650 payment to households on means-tested benefits, split into two chunks.

Most claimants got their first payment in July, with the second due in September.

But people on Tax Credits will get their payments later.

This is because Tax Credits - Working Tax Credit and Child Tax Credit - are being phased out and replaced by Universal Credit.

The Government is paying people on Tax Credits later to avoid making two payments to the same person if someone swaps to Universal Credit.

Tax Credit claimants will get a £326 government payment into their bank accounts between September 2 and 7 2022.

The first HMRC payments will total around £360million.

Chancellor Nadhim Zahawi said: "I know people are really concerned by rising prices so I’m glad that over a million more low earners will shortly receive their first cost of living payment."

People on Tax Credits will get their second payment in the winter.

HMRC has not yet given an exact date for this second payment.

Tax Credit claimants who also get other benefits from the Department for Work and Pensions will have already had their first cost of living payment from July 2022.

Aside from the cost of living payments, the Government has unveiled several schemes to give households help with the rising cost of living.

There is also a £150 council tax rebate being issued to those living in council tax A to D properties to help with the rising cost of bills.

These payments started going out in April, and will run until September 30.

There is also £150 for those who claim certain disability benefits and £300 for pensioners in receipt of Winter Fuel Payments.

Every home in England, Scotland and Wales will also receive £400 off their energy bills, spread out over six months from October.

The Household Support Fund is a pot of Government cash being handed out through local councils.

To get it, you will need to apply to your council.

The cash is being given out in different ways.

Some councils are offering money towards your bills, while others are giving out supermarket vouchers.

The support does vary between councils - as well as the eligibility criteria.

Households struggling with the cost of living could see tax cuts or more Government financial help from the new Prime Minister.

Chancellor Rishi Sunak and Foreign Secretary Liz Truss are currently battling to take over from current Prime Minister Boris Johnson, who resigned last month.

Sunak and Truss have both announced rough plans to help Brits if they become Prime Minister.

In a nutshell, Sunak is talking about more financial handouts, while Truss is leaning towards cutting taxes instead.

But nothing is confirmed, and the two candidates' announcements change constantly.
