Global engineering and digital services company Assystem has created 20 jobs in Sunderland as part of a countrywide recruitment push.
The French firm, which operates its energy transition team from the city, says the region is key hub for energy skills thanks to its pipeline of low carbon projects including offshore wind farms and hydrogen production plants. As part of plans to further tap into the UK clean energy market Assystem has created 450 jobs across the country, including engineering, technician and project management roles.
Following a partnership with Teesside University - encompassing collaborative research, knowledge exchange and student placements - the firm is recruiting for a range of positions in Sunderland, including for those in the early stages of their careers. Assystem says it is seeking candidates who are “committed to the clean energy switch” and has made strides to attract climate conscious talent through its ‘Switch On’ brand which it hopes will encourage workers who want to play a role in projects at the heart of the UK energy security strategy.

Engineering and digital technical roles available include mechanical engineers, electrical engineers, design engineers and project managers. Opportunities are also open to STEM graduates looking to enter the nuclear industry where Assystem is offering positions.
Assystem UK managing director Simon Barber said: “Sunderland is a strategic centre for Assystem, with the North Sea having long provided secure careers in the energy sector to people in the North East. This will continue as the region becomes a low-carbon hub, powered by renewables and focussed on the production of hydrogen, providing thousands of high-quality skilled jobs to the next generation of bright, innovative workers.”
Across the rest of the country, Assystem is working on new nuclear projects including the development of the world’s first Rolls Royce SMR - a factory built nuclear reactor - and the commissioning of Hinkley Point C, the UK’s first nuclear power plant since 1995. The company also has roles focused on the development of pioneering new fusion energy technologies as well as major transport and infrastructure projects such as HS2 and the Thames Tideway.
