The store have now apologised and assured customers it was never their intention, adding that they work closely with suppliers to ensure products are the highest quality.
Speaking to Edinburgh Live, Allan the receptionist said: "I bought the cheese in the Easter Road store, took it home and put it in the fridge for a day.
"When I opened it to use it there was green mould on it. I still have my receipt and have complained to the store."
Ranting to the German supermarket online, Allan Antonio wrote: "Please share this post to everybody looks how is the quality in Lidl."
"I bought this cheese yesterday and it was in my fridge since this and now THE CHEESE HAS MOULD."
The mild coloured cheddar cost £2.65. Images show the pale block of cheese with green fuzzy almost velvet mould growing across it.
A spokesperson for Lidl GB told Edinburgh Live : "We were very sorry to hear of this matter, as it is never our intention for a customer to be dissatisfied in any way."
Adding: "We work very closely with our suppliers to ensure that the products we sell are of the highest possible quality for our customers.
"We are, therefore, disappointed if our expected high standards were not met on this occasion. Our Quality Assurance team are in direct contact with the customer so that that a full and thorough investigation can be carried out."
The store is one of two open in the Leith neighbourhood at the moment due to the popular Kirkgate store being under renovation.
