An Edinburgh hotel has apologised after an English tourist claimed they had to crawl across their room floor to get to the toilet.
The guest hit out with a two star Tripadvisor review, claiming the hotel prioritised ‘what’s cool’ over basic needs.
“Imagine if WeWork ran hotels,” the review stated. “It’s that kind of focus on ‘what’s cool’ not the basic requirements of accommodation. I really wanted to like this place but in the end it just irritated me.”

The English guest stayed at Wilde Aparthotels By Staycity in Edinburgh’s Grassmarket in October, and he laid into what he called poor design in an otherwise great location.
“In an attempt to be cool they forgot some basics like the practical need for guests to be able to get in and out of bed, ” he said.
The review described the layout of the room in detail. The left side of the bed was described as ‘completely inaccessible’ with no space to put so much as a glass of water.
The bed, he claimed, was on a two foot high raised platform, and the left side of the bed was inaccessible without climbing onto the platform with no steps or disturbing his partner on the other side.
“To be honest there were so many design choices which prioritised cool over convenient that it just started to irritate me as I wondered who exactly these rooms were designed for,” the guest wrote.
“[Were they designed for] single overseas one week placement students who need an excessive amount of underbed storage? [These were] the kind of questions going round my head at night when I wanted to get up and use the toilet but couldn’t do it without having to slide my whole body out the end of the bed and crawl across a cold noisy wooden platform just to answer the call of nature.”
The guest suggested the space taken for dishwashers and fridges would be better used for space to get in and out of bed or for a bedside table. He criticised the placement of the full length mirror, which was in the dark, and he claimed there were no comfortable chairs in the room - just a table and dining chairs.
“Why are there an excessive amount of custom built shelves but none in the places you need. Like the bathroom? Or the left hand side of the bed? I would say again that the staff were great but they can’t fix rooms which just don’t deliver and overall the stay wasn’t at all relaxing as a result,” the guest concluded.
The Wilde Aparthotels general manager responded to the review on TripAdvisor, calling the review concerning.
“I am both saddened and concerned to learn that we failed to meet your expectations on this occasion, please accept my sincerest apologies. We are constantly working to improve our services. Thank you again for all your comments. We will hope to have the opportunity to welcome you back in the future,” the manager said.
The hotel has an average 4.5 star excellent review rating on TripAdvisor based on more than 700 reviews.
