Edinburgh Haymarket Hub hotel plans major revamp with 47 new rooms

An Edinburgh hotel submitted plans to the city council to build an extension with a proposed 47 new bedroom suites.

The Haymarket Hub sits across from Haymarket train station and currently accommodates 195 rooms including 34 internal doubles, 23 twin rooms and 138 standard double rooms.

The Edinburgh hotel, now owned by The Edinburgh Collective, has submitted a planning application to the council for an additional 47 bedrooms, bringing the total to 242.

These new rooms will be accommodated by building an extension out from the rear of the existing building and will also include a new kitchen and dining area to the rear of the hotel.

The proposed new kitchen would take place at the ground floor of the nine floor extension to the building.

The proposed development would take the form of two separate extensions to the rear of the building in what is currently a car park.

One extension would attach to a protruding part of the existing building and reach nine stories tall. This would actually make it three stories taller than the rest of the existing hotel.

The other extension would attach wrap around part of the rear of the building and only be two stories tall. Bringing the site area to 1528 Square Metres.

The application for the new extension is currently open to the public for public consultation. Edinburgh locals are free to send their comments, concerns and thoughts about the new construction to Edinburgh City Council for them to consider.

In 2021, during the Covid-19 pandemic, The Haymarket Hub closed its doors to become a homeless shelter as part of The Welcome Centre.

Originally founded by The Bethany Trust with support from the council and Scottish Government, The Welcome Centre came as a response to the Covid-19 crisis and allowed homeless people to stay in en-suite rooms at the hotel.

We have contacted The Edinburgh Collective for comment.
