Edinburgh EasyJet and British Airways cancellations cause 'chaos' ahead of Jubilee weekend

Budget airline easyJet has cancelled at least 40 fights domestic and European flights on Wednesday June 1.

This comes as airlines are facing staffing and scheduling pressure as a surge of customers flood into airports around the country.

Flights from London Gatwick to Edinburgh Airport were cancelled this morning, according to easyJet's websites.

The EZY6473 that was due to take off at 7:15am was cancelled as was flight EZY803 that was due to depart at 8:10am.

According to the Independent, easyJet axed 240 flights in the 10 days up to June 6 and the airline said they gave customers advance notice.

However, some passengers took to Twitter this morning to complain they had already arrived at Gatwick Airport for their flight to Edinburgh when they were informed of flight cancellation.

A spokesperson for easyJet said: "We are very sorry that flight EZY803 from London Gatwick to Edinburgh on 1 June was cancelled. We notified customers directly of their options to rebook or receive and refund and are providing hotel accommodation and meals where required. Nonetheless we fully understand the disruption this will have caused to their plans and we are very sorry for this."

British Airways have also been forced to cancel flights to Edinburgh Airport, along with other domestic destinations from Heathrow Airport.

According to BA's website, the flight BA1434 that was due to take off at 7.50am, was cancelled along with the 4.35pm BA1452 flight.

What are your rights if your flight is cancelled?

According to citizen's advice, you have the legal right to either:

  • A full refund - including other flights from the airline that you won’t use in the same booking such as onward or return flights
  • A replacement flight to get you to your destination.

If easyJet cancels a flight, customers will be notified directly via email and will be informed of their options. These options include transferring to an alternative flight, receiving a voucher for the value of the booking or applying for a refund via Manage Bookings on their easyJet account.

Travellers are also entitled to compensation if their flight is delayed. You can read more about that here.

On easyJet's terms and conditions, it reads: "Has your flight been cancelled? Has your flight been delayed so that you arrive at least three hours after the original scheduled arrival time? Have you been denied boarding involuntarily?

"If so, you may be entitled to the following compensation:

  • £220 for flights of 1500 km or less;
  • £350 for flights within Europe of more than 1500 km, and all other flights between 1500 and 3500 km;
  • £520 for all other flights of 3500km or more."

Citizens Advice also points out that if your flight is delayed over five hours, then you don't have to take it and you're entitled to a refund.

You can see easyJet's terms and conditions for cancellations here.
