DVSA pass rates reveal best and worst places to take your driving test in Greater Manchester

Taking your driving test is a nerve-racking experience. If you're lucky, it's something you only have to do once - but sometimes it takes a few tries.

On average, 51 per cent of people who took a driving test for the first time over the last year managed to pass on their first try, which suggests it's not easy to do. Taking a test is also not cheap, so not only are you on the road quicker but you're saving money too if you do manage to pass on your first try.

Learner drivers will want to make sure they have the best chance of passing their test. Test centres have set routes they will use to conduct a practical driving test, and some of these routes will be harder than others. Which one you get is just down to luck.

However, data released by the Driver and Vehicle Standards Agency (DVSA) could help you decide which test centre you have the best chance of passing at. There are 10 practical driving test centres in Greater Manchester, and some have a much higher pass rate than others.

Nationally, the driving test pass rate is just under 50 per cent. The latest data shows that 49.6 per cent of people who took a driving test between April and December last year passed it. Four of the nine test centres in Greater Manchester have a higher than average test pass rate, while the others fall below.

While almost six in 10 people pass a test at the centre with the highest rate, just over a third manage to pass at the centre with the lowest rate. Here are the pass rates for every centre in Greater Manchester - from the highest to the lowest.

Bolton

Hyde in Tameside has the highest pass rate in Greater Manchester at 58.7 per cent, but there's bad news for learner drivers. The test centre was permanently closed by the DVSA earlier this month.

With the Hyde test centre now out of action, Bolton has the highest pass rate in Greater Manchester, so could be the easiest place to pass a test.

Between April 2021 and December 2021, a total of 7,137 tests were taken at Bolton. A total of 4,099 tests were passed - that's a pass rate of 57.4 per cent.

Bredbury, Stockport

Between April 2021 and December 2021, a total of 2,514 tests were taken at Bredbury. A total of 1,343 tests were passed - that's a pass rate of 53.4 per cent.

Atherton, Wigan

Between April 2021 and December 2021, a total of 3,726 tests were taken at Atherton. A total of 1,900 tests were passed - that's a pass rate of 51 per cent.

Sale, Trafford

Between April 2021 and December 2021, a total of 5,860 tests were taken at Sale. A total of 2,924 tests were passed - that's a pass rate of 49.9 per cent.

Chadderton, Oldham

Between April 2021 and December 2021, a total of 6,448 tests were taken at Chadderton. A total of 3,119 tests were passed - that's a pass rate of 48.4 per cent.

West Didsbury, Manchester

Between April 2021 and December 2021, a total of 7,722 tests were taken at West Didsbury. A total of 3,696 tests were passed - that's a pass rate of 47.7 per cent.

Cheetham Hill, Manchester

Between April 2021 and December 2021, a total of 6,685 tests were taken at Cheetham Hill. A total of 3,151 tests were passed - that's a pass rate of 47.1 per cent.

Bury

Between April 2021 and December 2021, a total of 2932 tests were taken at Bury. A total of 1162 tests were passed - that's a pass rate of 39.6 per cent.

Rochdale

Rochdale has the lowest pass rate in Greater Manchester, so could be the hardest place to take a test.

Between April 2021 and December 2021, a total of 4,874 tests were taken at Rochdale. A total of 1,772 tests were passed - that's a pass rate of 36.4 per cent.
