Dumfriesshire’s Commonwealth Village is marking its status with a week-long history trail competition.
And the celebrations will culminate in a Super Saturday fundraiser this weekend.
The Eastriggs Community Group, which is organising the events, is hoping to generate enough money to buy a defibrillator for the village.
The streets in Eastriggs are all named after places in the Commonwealth to reflect the nationalities of those who worked at its munitions factory which operated along the Solway during World War I.
Yesterday was Commonwealth Day in the UK and the Eastriggs community is determined to raise awareness of their heritage and the part the factory played in the Great War.
Its fascinating story is told at its purpose-built Devil’s Porridge Museum.
Graeme MacGregor, festival director of Annan The History Town, said: “This is the second year that the community has organised a series of events for the Commonwealth Village.
“There will be various events around the village. In particular, two key events will delight the youngsters of the community.”
Until Sunday all ages can take part in A Wander Around The Wynds of The Commonwealth Village which will encourage people to discover more about the buildings and their heritage.
Entry forms are available from local shops who will also display a window poster featuring a QR code. The leaflet explains the competition – simply scan the code to uncover the questions at each participating premises.
There are £10 cash prizes for winners of the two categories – aged 10 years and under, and 11-16 years.
Super Saturday takes place on Saturday in Melbourne Park from noon to 4pm and admission is free.
Outdoor attractions including the Little Nippers Dog Demo team, Ridgeside Falconry display, Daffy Dill, face painting, and bouncy castles, amusement stalls and rides, with free treats courtesy of Spar.
There is the chance to win a medal in the Mini Commonwealth Games featuring shot put, archery, well throwing, long jump and more.
There will also be plenty of stalls.
Graham said: “All funds collected by the Eastriggs Community Group on Super Saturday from their fundraising stall are to provide a defibrillator in the middle of the community.
“Tombola prizes are being sought and if anyone wants to make a donation, please contact the secretary either through the email address eastriggscommunitygroup@hotmail.com, or via their Facebook page.
“Anyone interested in taking a stall for business or charity can also contact the secretary.”
