Dumfries is going daffodil crazy to help the Marie Curie charity.
Volunteers have been collecting at the Morrisons supermarket in Brooms Road since the annual March fundraising launch of the Great Daffodil Appeal on Thursday and the cash has been rolling in from big-hearted residents.
Morrisons Community champion Myra Smith, who helped launch the appeal with Marie Curie volunteers Sarah Magee and Emma McCall, said: “We are only too glad to help the appeal and the local Marie Curie group again. On Thursday alone we raised just under £700 at Morrisons which is an amazing amount and shows how popular the charity is. Thank you to our customers who have donated so far. People can make a donation at the collection tins or can add a donation at any checkout with your shopping.”
Last year more than 1,100 handcrafted daffodil creations went on sale at the store to help the charity last year during the pandemic.
Thanks to public support just before Covid-19 struck in 2020, the store raised nearly £4,000 which was the most at any of the company’s stores in Scotland and second in the UK overall that year.
It has been a tough time for the charity during the pandemic as Marie Curie nurses have still been providing care but the public fundraising has almost been at a standstill.
The charity relies on 50 per cent funding by the NHS and the other 50 per cent from donations.
Myra added: “We were glad to be able to help again and I am so proud of our local collectors.
“They give up their own time to raise funds for Marie Curie and make it more special as all money raised in store stays local.”
