Dumfries cafes team up to offer environmentally friendly cups

A group of cafes are tea-ing up a new service with environmentally friendly cups.

Peter Smith, manager of Kings Coffee and Books in Queensberry Street, Dumfries, has helped launch the YoYo cups idea for customers.

And the two other venues joining the eco move are The Stove and Mrs Green’s Teashop.

Mr Smith, 35, said: “It’s a local start up which is a self-funded project.

“The cups are made of metal instead of plastic and this is a trial run.

“The cups have a £3 deposit and are insulated to keep your drinks warm or cold.

“And if you end up forgetting and then paying for other new ones on your trips then they can be brought back and the deposits are all refundable.

“I am born and bred in Dumfries, but travelled a lot after school and moved to Australia for a while.

“I saw this kind of idea in Australia and New Zealand with similar projects.

“So, I believe this is the first local one and we are sure it will be a success and help the environment with less plastic being used.”

He added: “The beauty of these cups is that it keeps your coffee really hot, or if it is a hot summer’s day and you prefer a cold drink then it keeps it very cool.”
