Dublin Fire Brigade have urged the public to keep their chimneys clean after attending an overnight blaze.
Blanchardstown Fire Station attended the scene of a chimney fire last night. Dublin Fire Brigade estimates that they put out over 300 chimney fires across 2021, many of which they say could have been avoided.
Fire experts recommend that a chimney is cleaned at least once a year to prevent the build up of soot. Additionally, households should only use approved coal and seasoned wood when lighting a fire in their sitting rooms.

The fire brigade also recommends that people clean their chimney just before the onset of winter. Because fireplaces tend not to be used in summer time, birds often sit on chimney flues during warm spells.
They also recommend consulting with a chimney expert about the maintenance of the flue. The mortar joints that make up a chimney can deteriorate over time, allowing smoke and heat to leave the flue and enter the brick work.
