Drivers urged to check for freezing fluids that could damage car

There are weather warnings, both yellow and amber, in place for parts of Scotland with many people opting to stay inside to avoid the cold weather - and of course waiting for their car to defrost.

However whilst waiting for your car can be a pain, a hefty repair bills is an even bigger pain with motoring experts issuing warnings asking drivers to take care when getting behind the wheel.

Thankfully in order to stay safe and to help keep your vehicle on the road, Halfords have compiled a list of common signs you may come across and how to deal with them.

It comes as the experts have issued a warning about freezing fluids telling drivers that it can cause serious damage and a not so lovely bill at the end of it should fluids freeze under your car bonnet thanks to the plummeting temperatures.

They says that the usual suspects are often screenwash and antifreeze so you will want to ensure that they are both topped up with a mix that will stay in liquid form even in the coldest temperatures.

Halfords also have other tips about cars that are important to note. Here's what they want you to know.

Check your tyre pressure

As it gets colder, your tyre pressure will drop. Halfords are asking people to check their tyres every to weeks and if they need them, pump them up, As well as this, they are also asking motorists to check their tread depth as well. You can find out more about this by looking at their guide.

Windscreen wipers

Scraping ice off windows can be quite a chore at times. But if your wipers are frozen to the screen, it's a whole other story. Halfords say that people should turn their automatic wipes off before you turn on the engine, if you have them, and free them as you clear the window.

They add: "To prevent it altogether, use a frost guard or windscreen shield and tuck them under your wipers. These will stop your windscreen freezing overnight, so you can just pull them off in the morning."

Windows and doors frozen shut

Halfords say that if this has happened to you, the best thing to do is to wait for your car to warm up or use a lock de-icer. However they warn that if you are going to do this, make sure that you don’t leave it in the car adding: "if your doors are frozen shut, don’t yank on the handle as it could break off. Instead, use a de-icer around the door to defrost it before you try opening it"

You can check out the tips in full by visiting the Halfords website.
