Drivers can get NCT test free of charge with lesser-known rule

Many drivers who are due for an NCT have been left waiting for months as slots to have the test done have a tendency to fill up rapidly.

Every vehicle in the country has to undergo a car safety test to make sure that it is roadworthy, however, how often this test takes place is dependent on how old your vehicle is.

Regardless, it can be a struggle to get a test date in the first place.

There is a rule in place if you are a driver who has been waiting for too long to get their vehicle inspected, you may get it free of charge.

According to the NCT standards of customer service, the programme "aims to ensure that the average lead time for an appointment at an individual NCT centre is less than or equal to 15 days".

However, in cases where a driver has been left waiting for an appointment for over 28 days, they can get their NCT free of charge.

There are a few exceptions to this rule. A spokesperson said: "Those waiting for an NCT for over four weeks can't get the test free of charge if:

  • "The test is overdue by more than seven days at the time of contacting us;
  • "An appointment was offered seven days or more prior to the test due date;
  • "You have made specific requests regarding suitable days, times or dates;
  • "You have declined or rearranged two or more appointments;
  • "You have failed to attend an appointment
  • "You have previously accepted or requested an appointment outside of the 28-day period."

Drivers are also being urged to be aware that the NCT has undergone a few changes.

Beginning on Friday, May 20, three new items are to be tested on cars for the national car test, including checking if new vehicles have E-Call working in the car. Everything you need to know about the new changes is here.
