Dr Mosley's exact recommended amount of protein to eat for weight loss

Dr Michael Mosley has shared what dieters need to eat and how much protein is ideal to maximise your weight loss potential.

The macronutrient makes up a large component of Dr Mosley's various diet plans and is a key factor in whether shedding pounds can be successful in the long term, reports Wales Online. Increasing your protein intake has a number of benefits which can contribute to healthy weight loss.

Eating foods high in the nutrient has been proven to help dieters keep fuller for longer as it reduces the hunger hormone ghrelin, suppresses cravings and decreases the likelihood of making poor food choices. Dr Mosley's Fast 800 website recommends following a Mediterranean style diet, packed with fish, legumes, beans, vegetables, fruit, Greek yoghurt and wholegrains.

This should be combined with decreasing the amount of simple carbohydrates you eat to under 50g per day. In a blog post, the Dr Mosley's led Fast 800 wrote: "Protein and weight loss go hand in hand, and eating enough of this macronutrient is essential to losing weight healthily and effectively.

"Unlike carbohydrates and fat, the body cannot store protein, so it's important to eat quality sources of protein each day to reap the benefits."

Dr Mosley recommends eating at least 60g of protein per day to take advantage of the macronutrient's benefits. According to the doctor, a protein rich diet can boost the metabolism, reduce appetite, change weight-regulating hormones and can also:

  • Increase weight loss while sleeping

  • Maintain good bone health

  • Lower risk of osteoporosis

  • Lower blood pressure

  • Reduce risk of cardiovascular disease

Getting at least 60g of protein each day should not be hard if you're eating a healthy and varied diet. Dr Mosley said: "From fish to eggs, to tofu and nuts and seeds, finding sources of protein that you enjoy and won't get bored of will make it easier to reach that 60g daily recommended amount."
