City officials and representatives of social service agencies will gather in downtown Lexington Thursday for a candlelight vigil marking National Homeless Persons’ Memorial Day. The event takes place in the district of Councilmember Hannah LeGris. She said the aim is to honor people who’ve died while unhoused – and to look ahead for those still alive.
“We're gathered in downtown Lexington to honor the members of our community here who have been affected and to help us build a coalition and gain attention so that we have a brighter future.”
LeGris said that future will be a place where policy and humanity can intersect to support more people – and that the city’s made real progress on a difficult problem during her three years on the council.
“I think that we certainly have made really good strides to meeting the needs of people who are unhoused in our community, and also toward being proactive, to make sure that people don't become unhoused in the first place.”
LeGris also praised the nonprofits that work with the city to help unhoused individuals. The candlelight vigil begins at 5:30 p.m. in Centennial Park.
