Doctor Who filming in Bristol this week

It looks like Doctor Who is coming to Bristol this week - and will be filming upcoming scenes near an iconic landmark in the city. According to a Twitter account called 'Doctor Who Production News', the BBC show will be shooting scenes during the day this Wednesday, June 15.

The tweet, which was posted just after 11am today (June 12) read: "Doctor Who day shoot 6:30am - 6pm in central Bristol, probably near Bristol Temple Meads June 15. #dwsr". The hashtag included - 'dwsr' stands for Doctor Who Set Report.

Back in May, it was announced that Ncuti Gatwa will take over form Jodie Whittaker as the 14th Doctor in the franchise, following news back in July 2021 that Whittaker would be leaving the role. The Scottish actor, who was born in Rwanda, starred as Eric Effiong in the popular Netflix series 'Sex Education' alongside Asa Butterfield and Gillian Anderson.

He will become the first black actor to play the title role full-time. In 2020, Jo Martin made a guest appearance as a previously unknown version of the Doctor hiding on Earth disguised as a human tour guide. The BBC has also confirmed that David Tennant and Catherine Tate will return to Doctor Who and are currently filming for the show's 60th anniversary, which it will celebrate in 2023.

Tennant played the 10th Doctor from 2005-2010, while Tate played his companion Donna Noble. It's not the first time since his departure that David Tennant has returned to the show however, he made a brief return in 2013, joining then-doctor Matt Smith for the show's 50th anniversary.

It's not yet clear the role Tennant and Tate's characters will play in the celebrations, however it is a well-known fact that their series of Doctor Who in 2008 is the most successful since the show's revival in 2005, with audience figures averaging more than eight million viewers per episode.

It's not yet known whether scenes being reportedly filmed in Bristol this week will feature the new doctor, Ncuti Gatwa, or David Tennant and Catherine Tate. But it'll certainly be exciting to see a bit of Bristol on screens during the show.
