Minister for Sericulture, Youth Empowerment and Sports K.C. Narayana Gowda has instructed the Shivamogga district administration to take appropriate measures to ensure peace on campuses of educational institutes. He gave this direction in a KDP review meeting held in Shivamogga on Saturday, in the wake of the recent protests by students over the hijab issue.
The Minister, who is also Minister in charge of the district, said police personnel should be deployed at schools and colleges if necessary and the interim order of Karnataka High Court be implemented.
Meanwhile, at the meeting, legislators including S. Rudre Gowda and Ashok Naik perceived that the stone quarries should be allowed to function in the district. The quarries were stopped following the blast at one of the quarry sites near Shivamogga last year. Mr. Naik said the people would get sand and jelly at affordable prices if the quarries were allowed to function.
Deputy Commissioner Selvamani R. said that the quarries with all legal clearances could continue their activities. However, there had been restriction on those quarries that are situated within a 10 km radius of forest areas. The issue was in the court and no decision could be taken on such quarries.
RDPR Minister K.S. Eshwarappa and senior officers also attended the meeting.
