Disney's Marvel Moon Knight lambasted for 'atrocious Mary Poppins Cockney accents'

It was lambasted as “ropey”, “atrocious” and “sinful and depraved”.

Fans of superhero franchise Marvel were horrified when a new teaser dropped for upcoming series Moon Knight, starring Oscar Isaac.

Viewers claimed his “faux-British Kingsman accent” is reminiscent of Dick Van Dyke’s infamous Mary Poppins chimney sweep, Bert.

“That cannot be legal,” said one horrified viewer. “It breaks some laws or something.” The Guatemalan-American Star Wars actor plays Steven Grant, who struggles with dissociative identity disorder.

Fortunately, that means the terrible accent – believed to be an impersonation of Cockney, though one person described it as “somewhere in the South East of England, possibly East London” – is only likely to be associated with one of his multiple personalities.

“Dude watched too many Guy Ritchie movies,” scoffed one social media user, while another said Oscar “sounds like James Corden” in the clip – who, in fairness, is actually British.

Some people (mainly in the US) found it “sexy”.

However the Guardian compared it to both “an 18th century Leicestershire grandmother” and “a depressed Teletubby”.

Moon Knight will come to Disney+ in March.

Cate Blanchett's 'terrifying role'

Never mind apocalyptic film Don’t Look Up, Cate Blanchett took on a really terrifying role in lockdown...

The Oscar-winning Australian actress – who lives in East Sussex – had to emulate her seven-year-old daughter Edith’s teacher, in order to homeschool her.

“She wouldn’t allow me to teach maths or phonics unless I dressed up as her teacher and put on her teacher’s voice,” Cate, 52, laughed to the BBC.

She described the saga as “traumatic” but said she now considered the teacher to be a “saint”.

“One thing that really came home was just how incredible teachers are,” says mum-of-four Cate.

Gervais vs Spielberg

It’s good to know Ricky Gervais has the same sharp-tongued humour when he’s face-to-face with A-listers as he superbly dishes out en mass while hosting the Golden Globes.

“I met Steven Spielberg once,” he tells NME. “We were talking about this episode of Columbo he directed that they didn’t use. I said, ‘Still not over it then…’”

The multi-Oscar winning director “just laughed”, Ricky says proudly.
