Department of Health issues statement on booster jab Covid app update for travel

An update to the Covid app for Northern Ireland’s international travellers to prove they have received their booster job is expected by the end of January , according to the Department of Health.

Some countries require official proof of having received a booster jab in order to enter them.

One Belfast Live reader said it was a particular problem when travelling to certain European countries including Italy, which only recognise vaccinations that have been administered within several months.

The reader said: "I am just back from Italy and a Super Green Pass is required to access hotels, restaurants, ski slopes etc.

"The Northern Ireland Covid pass did not work as the booster is not included on it. Luckily I had downloaded the QR for my booster as a single dose letter from the NI Direct website.

"My brother travelling from England had the booster on his pass. Apparently the booster will appear on the NI app at end of this month!"

The Super Green Pass is Italy’s latest requirement for entering public places and public transport throughout the country.

As of January 10, the Super Green Pass is also required in bars and restaurants (both indoors and outdoors), gyms and hotels, in addition to cinemas, theatres and sports stadiums.

To acquire the pass, people are required to provide proof of full vaccination or recovery from Covid in the past six months.

Boosters are also now compulsory for travel to Austria and France while a number of other countries are putting time limits on what it means to be fully vaccinated.

From February 1, UK travellers won't be allowed into Spain if their most recent coronavirus jab was more than 270 days ago. So if you've only had two jabs, and the second was 270 days ago, you will need a booster jab taken more than 14 days before your arrival date.

In a statement, a spokesperson for the Department of Health said: "Currently, a PDF certificate, with a QR code, which includes proof of your booster vaccination, is the solution for international travel.

"Work is at an advanced stage on adding booster certificates to the COVIDCert NI app. It is anticipated this will be delivered by the end of January 2022."
