A death row murderer made no final words and refused his last meal before his execution. Kevin Johnson, 37, was handed the death penalty for the murder of police officer William McEntee.
The incident occurred back in 2005, with the murderer targeting the policeman from Kirkwood Police Department in a revenge ploy. Johnson alleged McEntee did not do enough to save his 12-year-old brother's life, reports the Mirror.
The killer's legal team did not deny his guilt but claimed racism played a key role in the jury's decision to land him with the death penalty. For his crimes, the 37-year-old was sentenced to death by lethal injection at Missouri state prison.
However, prior to the procedure last night, Johnson's legal team made a last minute appeal on his punishment. However, it was denied and the wheels were put in motion for the lethal injection to go ahead as planned.
Prior to their death, all inmates on death row are allowed a final meal of their choosing, however the 37-year-old turned down this opportunity. He also turned down the opportunity to give a final statement prior to his execution.
Johnson's 19-year-old daughter was refused permission to watch the execution as in Missouri witnesses need to be aged 21. Despite that he was not alone and, in a first for modern executions in the state, Johnson had company in the execution room.
The killer was joined by spiritual advisor Reverend Darryl Gray at his side during the procedure. The two reportedly conversed until the drug was administered.
Recalling the scene in the execution room, Gray said: "We read scripture and had a word of prayer. He apologised again.
"He apologized to the victim's family. He apologised to his family.
"He said he was looking forward to seeing his baby brother. And he said he was ready."
