PAIPORTA, Spain (AP) — Last week's catastrophic flooding in Spain has left a trail of devastation, with 217 confirmed dead and 89 people still missing. The small town of Paiporta, located on Valencia's southern outskirts, has been particularly hard hit, with over 60 fatalities reported.

The flash floods caught many residents off guard, including one family who tragically lost a 3-year-old girl and her mother. The father survived by clinging to a fence as the tsunami-like wave swept away their car. The car now hangs precariously off the edge of a road, a grim reminder of the swiftness and ferocity of the floodwaters.

Residents of Paiporta have expressed frustration over what they perceive as a lack of support and assistance in the aftermath of the disaster. The town's mayor has called for outside intervention, citing the overwhelming damage to municipal buildings and the emotional toll on civil servants.

The Spanish government has allocated a 10.6-billion-euro relief package for affected areas, with additional funding requested to aid in the recovery efforts. The cleanup operation is ongoing, with volunteers and emergency services working tirelessly to remove mud and debris, clear streets, and assist in the search for bodies.

The scale of destruction extends beyond Paiporta, affecting numerous municipalities along the Mediterranean coast. The region is grappling with the immense task of rebuilding homes, businesses, and infrastructure in the wake of the disaster.

Despite the challenges ahead, the resilience and solidarity of the community are evident in the efforts of volunteers like Juanma Baztan López, who are dedicated to restoring normalcy to the region. As the cleanup continues, the road to recovery may be long, but the spirit of unity and determination remains strong.
