Bank holidays are always a nice little treat for those of us lucky enough to get the day off when they roll around.
This year, as the King’s coronation approaches, there’ll be an extra day off for people across the UK to celebrate.
Many shops, schools and businesses close on these bank holidays, also known as public holidays, and you’ll find many services, like trains and buses, running on a reduced schedule. Many of the UK’s public holidays are clustered in the warmer months, with most in April and May.
So if you’re wanting to maximise the use of your holidays, booking days off around bank holidays will mean you take plenty of time off using just a smidge of your annual leave allowance.

Bank holidays in April
Easter takes place in the middle of April this year. The bank holidays in April are:
Good Friday, April 7
Easter Monday, April 10
Bank holidays in May
Thanks to the King’s Coronation, there’s an extra bank holiday in May. Added to that are the celebrations for May Day and the spring bank holiday meaning that of the five Mondays in May this year, three will be bank holidays.
Early May bank holiday, May 1
Coronation of King Charles III, May 8
Spring bank holiday, May 29
For the Scottish, however, it’ll be one bank holiday less as they do not mark Easter Monday as a bank holiday.
Bank holidays will have an impact on payment dates for salaries and benefits, too. As banks do not operate on bank holidays, payment dates are normally brought forward to the working day before you are due to be paid.
This means that if you are due to receive money on Good Friday (April 7) or Easter Monday (April 10), you should get paid on Thursday, April 6, instead. Similarly, if you are due to be paid on Monday, May 1, you can expect to receive your cash on Friday, April 28.
