Damon Wayans Jr. advocates for more realistic sex scenes in movies

Damon Wayans Jr. wants sex scenes in movies to be more realistic.

In a recent interview with Yahoo Entertainment, actor Damon Wayans Jr. shared his thoughts on romantic comedies and one thing he would change about them - the portrayal of sex scenes. Wayans expressed his desire for more realistic depictions, stating, 'I think what I would lose is how good the sex is in all the movies because they're always like rolling off each other, like, 'That was crazy.' … It’s wack a lot of the time.' He believes that these scenes should reflect what happens in real life.

Wayans, known for his role in the Netflix rom-com Players alongside Gina Rodriguez, also revealed that he initially had reservations about the typical format of romantic comedies. However, after working on Players, he began to embrace it. 'I used to not like the idea of knowing how the movie is going to end from the beginning,' he said. 'But after doing this movie, I thought because this was such a fresh take on the rom-com, that I'm OK with [knowing the ending]. I already knew how the movie was going to end by the second scene, even when reading [the script], but the journey is what kind of differentiates it. So I'm cool with that staying the same.'

Players tells the story of New York sportswriter Mack, played by Rodriguez, who has developed successful hook-up techniques with her friends. However, when she unexpectedly develops feelings for one of her targets, she must break free from her usual game plan. Wayans' perspective on romantic comedies was influenced by the unique approach of Players.

Interestingly, Wayans isn't the only actor who has voiced his thoughts on sex scenes in the entertainment industry. Henry Cavill also recently shared his perspective, expressing his lack of enthusiasm for filming intimate scenes in movies and TV shows. On the Happy Sad Confused podcast, Cavill stated, 'I don’t understand them, I’m not a fan... Sometimes they’re overused these days.' He further highlighted that the power of human imagination often supersedes explicit depictions, deeming them somewhat insignificant if not serving a greater purpose in a film or show.

Both Wayans and Cavill's comments shed light on the evolving conversation within the entertainment industry regarding the portrayal of sex and intimacy. While some actors, like Wayans, call for more authenticity and realism, others, such as Cavill, question the overall necessity and impact of explicit scenes. These actors' insights serve as a reminder that the depiction of sex in media is a subject open for exploration and reconsideration. Ultimately, it is important for creators to strike a balanced approach that respects both the story they aim to tell and the audience's desire for compelling and relatable narratives.
