It’s been a few days since the Dallas Cowboys ended their season with an embarrassing final play fiasco, but the fallout from it all continues to rage on.
Lost in the jokes and the memes was the unfortunate fact that Cowboys fans threw trash at the referees after the game in an unacceptable expression of their anger at how the game ended. And in his postgame press conference, Dak Prescott threw some shade at the referees himself, stating “credit to [the fans] then” after being told fans were throwing trash at the officials exiting the field.
On Tuesday, Prescott tweeted an apology for his postgame blunder, stating that his “words were uncalled for and unfair” alongside a series of messages.
I deeply regret the comments I made regarding the officials after the game on Sunday.
I was caught up in the emotion of a disappointing loss and my words were uncalled for and unfair.

I hold the NFL Officials in the highest regard and have always respected their professionalism and the difficulty of their jobs.
The safety of everyone who attends a game or participates on the field of a sporting event is a very serious matter.

That was a mistake on my behalf, and I am sorry.

Earlier in the day on Tuesday, the official NBA Referees Twitter account — yes, the NBA — posted a tweet condemning Prescott’s original comments, stating that “as an NFL leader, he should know better”.
It’s clear Prescott should not have said what he said in the heat of the moment, as throwing things at officials — and players! — is not the way to go about showcasing your frustrations. Good on Prescott for apologizing in a swift manner, even if it was for a throwaway comment when emotions were high.
