Could This EV Dirtbike Finally Become a Reality?

The electric motorcycle scene is heating up. More and more riders are looking for cleaner, high-performance alternatives to gas-powered bikes, and manufacturers are stepping up in a big way. We’re seeing everything from sleek urban commuters to hardcore adventure-ready EVs, and now, it looks like Hero MotoCorp is about to throw its hat into the off-road electric game.

Hero isn’t just a household name in India either, it’s a global player.

Known for building solid, affordable motorcycles, the brand has also been making some big international moves. Its partnership with Harley-Davidson and a $60 million investment in Zero Motorcycles prove that Hero isn’t just playing around when it comes to electric bikes. And with its own EV sub-brand, Vida, it’s been steadily making a name for itself in the two-wheeled electric space.

Now, things are getting even more interesting. Hero has just filed a design patent for an electric dirt bike which will most likely be marketed under the Vida name. We don’t have all the details yet, but from what we’ve seen, it looks a lot like the Acro concept Hero showcased at EICMA 2023—a lightweight, learner-friendly electric bike. If this patent turns into a real production model, it’ll be Hero’s first serious electric dirt bike, and that’s a pretty big deal.

The design suggests an aggressive, stripped-down machine with a slim seat, beak-like front guard, and a conventional swingarm. The battery isn’t huge, which hints at a lightweight, nimble ride perfect for trail fun rather than all-day endurance riding. But the big questions remain, how much power will it pack? What’s the range? Will it be a full-on performance machine like the Stark Varg, or more of a fun, accessible trail bike?

We do have some clues, though. Hero has already shown its off-road EV ambitions with the Vida Concept Lynx, which made waves at EICMA 2023. This thing was light—just 82 kg (181 lbs)—and packed a mid-mounted 15 kW (21 hp) motor and a compact 3-kWh battery, good for about an hour of hard riding. That bike was just a concept, but it could be a preview of what’s coming. If Hero took notes from the Lynx, we might see something even more refined and capable in a production model.

So, where does Vida stand right now? Well, in India, the brand has been slowly growing with its electric scooters, but international expansion is still up in the air. That could all change with an electric dirt bike. Unlike city-focused EVs, a capable off-road machine could have serious global appeal, attracting riders in Europe, North America, and Southeast Asia—places where trail riding is huge.

If Hero plays this right, Vida could go from a regional player to a worldwide name.

Bottom line? A legit electric dirt bike from a giant like Hero MotoCorp would shake things up, not just in India but across the industry. Other brands have dabbled in electric off-roaders, but Hero has the scale and reach to make it mainstream. Of course, this is all speculation for now—but it’s not baseless. The signs are there, and Hero’s electric push is only getting stronger. When this thing finally drops, it won’t just make waves—it’s gonna be huge.
