The Indian National Congress’ income continued to decline in 2020-2021 when compared with previous years. The party earned ₹285.76 crore from donations and other income in 2020-21, down from ₹682.21 crore in 2019-2020 and ₹918.03 crore in 2018-2019.
According to the Congress’ audited annual accounts for 2020-2021, which was submitted to the Election Commission of India (EC) on March 30 and published by the EC on Thursday, the party received the bulk of its income from “collection by issuing coupons” (₹156.90 crore). Donations, grants and contributions were down to ₹95.42 crore from ₹469.38 crore in the previous fiscal. The party also reported receiving ₹10.07 crore from electoral bonds.
The party’s expenditure, which had increased due to the 2019 Lok Sabha polls to ₹998.15 crore, fell in 2020-2021 to ₹209 crore.
The EC also published annual reports of the Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) and Janata Dal-United) (JD-U) on Thursday. The NCP declared an income of ₹34.92 crore, down from ₹85.58 crore in 2019-2020. The party’s expenditure fell from ₹109.18 crore in 2019-2020 to ₹12.17 crore in 2020-2021. The JD(U) saw its income increase from ₹23.25 crore in 2019-2020 to ₹65.31 crore in 2020-2021, which was an election year in Bihar. The party’s expenses also increased from ₹10.67 crore to ₹24.34 crore.
The Bharatiya Janata Party’s (BJP) annual report for 2020-2021 has not been published by the EC so far. However, the party out-earned and out-spent all others in 2019-2020 with ₹3,623.28 crore as income and ₹1,651.02 crore as expenditure, according to its report for that year.
