Company to cease trading at Newark factory with staff set to lose jobs next month

A Notinghamshire-based company has confirmed it will close its manufacturing site with around 100 staff there set to lose their jobs. Goodlife Foods, which operates from a factory in Brunel Drive in Newark, will move all of its operations to mainland Europe next month.

The decision has been made by the company after a consultation, with no "suitable or viable" solution found other tha closing the site, due to "challenging trading conditions" in the UK market. It means that the factory will close its doors on May 6.

They say existing staff at the site will be "supported" to find alternative employment outside of Goodlife Foods. The manufacturer employs around 600 people across all of its sites and produces over four million snacks at its bases in the Netherlands, England and Denmark - it has been reported around 100 of these jobs come from the company's Newark site.

The company said in a trading announcement: "Further to the announcement made on 13th January, we have now completed the collective and individual consultations with our colleagues on ways of avoiding the proposed Newark site closure, or at least minimise the impact.

"Unfortunately no suitable or viable alternatives have been found, therefore, the decision has been taken to close the UK manufacturing site in Newark, and to subsequently move all volume into our Group production facilities in mainland Europe.

"The decision has been driven by the challenging trading conditions that we have experienced in the UK market over recent years and that we believe we would continue to face into 2022 and beyond. By moving our production out of the UK, we can leverage the benefits of scale and efficiencies that the wider Group can offer.

"We will continue to manufacture product at our Newark site up until the closure date of May 6 2022. Leading up to this date we will be working closely with and supporting our colleagues in Newark to find alternative employment outside of Goodlife Foods."
