Colin Farrell tipped for Oscar nod as new Irish flick receives rave reviews

Colin Farrell has been tipped for Oscar glory following the premiere of The Banshees of Inishern.

The new Irish flick, which Farrell stars in alongside fellow Dub Brendan Gleeson, had its premiere at Venice Film Festival last week, and saw Colin take home the award for Best Actor for his portrayal of Padraic. Critics now believe that the 46 year old Dublin actor is in with a good chance of winning his first Oscar.

Variety said that Colin will receive his first Oscar nomination for the performance "if there’s any justice", while Vanity Fair said The Banshees of Inisherin is Colin Farrell "at his best". The Dub is yet to win an Oscar, and many believe he was snubbed back in 2008 for his role in In Bruges, a film in which Brendan Gleeson also starred.

The Banshees of Inisherin tells the story of life-long friends from a remote Irish island, one of which suddenly decides he's not speaking to the other. The movie is set in 1923 and sees the two friends, Padraic (Colin Farrell) and Colm (Brendan Gleeson), on opposite sides of the Irish Civil War and how their bitter friendship turns violent.

Padraic's sister Siobhan is played by Kerry Condon while Barry Keoghan plays troubled young islander Dominic. The two attempt to help Padraic repair his relationship with Colm (Brendan Gleeson), but the repeated efforts only cause more tension.

Accepting his Venice film Festival Best Actor award in a video message, Farrell said he was "utterly shocked and thrilled". The Banshees of Iniserin is the first film director Martin McDonagh has shot in his native Ireland.

Although he is yet to receive an Oscar, Colin Farrell has a number of awards under his belt including A Golden Globe for In Bruges and an MTV Movie Award for Phone Booth. The Banshees Of Inisherin is set to be released in Irish cinemas on Friday, October 21.
