Cliff dramatically collapses onto UK beach as heatwave could cause more landslides

Horrified witnesses watched on helplessly as a cliff crashed onto a beach in the UK this morning.

The collapse of the Sidmouth cliff in Devon, was the result of a second major landslide along the Jurassic Coast in two weeks.

According to eyewitness reports, the slabs continued to fall even hours after the landslide began.

Emergency services raced to the scene including the police and the coastguard.

Luckily there have not been reports of any injuries.

Temperatures have caused cracks in the rocks causing them to collapse due to a second heatwave in the UK this year.

Experts have warned that with temperatures soaring, more cliffs could crumble without warning.

Police have also warned the public to stay away from the area and not to walk on the beach where the rock face could potentially fall

Rural East Devon Police said in a tweet: "Another large cliff fall this morning. Reminder to beach users not to walk on the beach East of Sidmouth due to unstable cliffs which could fall at any time."

Temperatures hitting a record breaking 40C has been blamed for the two landslides.

Dorset Council have issued a warning that heat was causing expansions in the rocks and that landslides would be more likely to occur.

The council said: “Heat causes rocks to expand and, particularly during temperature fluctuations, any pre-existing cracks can widen, and new cracks can also form. This makes cliffs potentially more unstable and rockfalls more likely to happen.”
