Clever tip to save more than £100 on your phone, TV and internet tariffs

Sky, BT and Virgin customers can save over a hundred pounds by switching their phone, TV and broadband package under the government's social tariff.

Various internet providers offer "essential broadband deals" for as little as £10 a month. These tariffs are available for those on universal credit or benefits but only 1.2% of those eligible have taken advantage of the money-saving packages.

The government set up a new scheme to allow internet providers to check if a customer is eligible once they are given their permission. Customers can call their providers and ask to change their current regular tariff to the essential broadband package available under the new social tariff.

Eligible customers will no longer be charged "early termination fees". The new system in place will make accessing these cheaper tariffs more accessible to customers. Previously customers had to prove they were eligible as often as once a month.

The service providers offering social tariffs include:

  • BT Home Essentials, £15 a month
  • BT Home Essentials 2, £20 a month
  • Now Broadband Basics, £20 a month
  • Sky Broadband Basics, £20 a month
  • Virgin Media Essentials Broadband, £15 a month
  • Country Connect Social Tariff, £15 a month
  • G. Network Essential Fibre Broadband, £15 a month
  • Hyperopic Fair Fibre 50, £15 a month
  • Hyperopic Fair Fibre 150, £25 a month

  • KCOM Full Fibre Flex, £14.99 a month

  • VOXI For Now, £10 a month

Digital Secretary Nadine Dorries, said: "Social tariffs are vital for families struggling with bills, keeping them connected even in tough times. Our discussion with broadband companies led to the range of social tariffs on the market today and we’ve secured a raft of new cost-of-living commitments from them to ensure help is available for anyone that needs it.

"I urge anyone concerned about falling behind on payments to contact their supplier to see what support is available.

Internet service providers will be required to gain customers' consent before speaking to Department for Work and Pensions about their eligibility.
