Cheapest UK supermarket for February revealed out of Aldi, Tesco, Lidl and more

Aldi has been crowned the cheapest UK supermarket for the ninth month in a row by Which? consumer champions.

Which? compared the price of 43 popular groceries at eight of the biggest high street chains to find the best value store.

The price of a basket of goods cost £74.81 at Aldi in February, which was £21.78 cheaper than doing the same shop at Waitrose.

Lidl was the second cheapest store (£77.50) followed by Sainsbury’s (£85.25), Tesco (£85.32), Asda (£85.81) and Morrisons (£89.01).

Ocado came in seventh place (£89.96) and the most expensive supermarket in February was Waitrose (£96.59).

Which? also compared a larger trolley of 139 items - the original 43, plus 96 more - containing some branded goods.

Aldi and Lidl are never included in the bigger comparison as not all branded items can be found in these stores.

Asda was the cheapest for this larger trolley, retaining the title it has held since January 2020.

It cost £355.29 for the bigger shop in Asda in February, with the next cheapest being Sainsbury’s (£358.77).

Waitrose was £41.29 more expensive than Asda, coming in at £396.58. You can see the full results below.

Reena Sewraz, Which? Retail Editor, said: “The cost of living crisis has seen food and drink prices put huge pressure on household budgets.

“It is no surprise to see many people turning to discounters like Aldi when our research shows they could save up to £22 on a typical shop.

“Our findings show that while prices are going up, some supermarkets are significantly more expensive than others.

“As well as choosing a supermarket that is cheap overall, you can save in other ways by swapping from branded to cheaper own-brand products, sticking to a shopping list, and resisting the temptation to pick up special offers you may not need.”
