The cheapest supermarket in the UK in August has been named. In a survey carried out by Which?, a shop of 49 items from all the major supermarkets was compared.
Lidl has found itself in the top spot for much of 2022. But in August, Aldi took the crown.
The budget retailer was cheapest for a shop of 49 items, £76.24 on average. The same shop of comparable items at Waitrose was £102.20 on average, meaning it was £25.96 more than Aldi.

Lidl was the second cheapest supermarket in August, where it cost £77.90, followed by ASDA in third place at £85.99. Sainsbury’s was in fourth place, where a shop of 49 items came to £88.05 on average, with Tesco shortly behind in fifth place at £88.48.
Near the bottom of the table, a shop at Morrisons was found to cost £96.54, with Ocado in seventh at £98.75. Waitrose was last, where Which? said a trolley of 49 items came to £102.20 on average.
Which? also compared the cost of a larger trolley of 153 items - the original 49 plus 104 more - at all the big supermarkets, excluding Aldi and Lidl. Aldi and Lidl are never included in the larger shop comparison, as many brands can’t be found at the discounters.
Asda was the cheapest supermarket for this trolley once again - holding on to its crown as the cheapest traditional supermarket in the Which? larger comparison since January 2020. It cost £337.50 on average for our big trolley shop at Asda, beating Sainsbury's which was in second place at £360.93.
Tesco was in third place for the bigger shop, costing £362.48, with Morrisons coming fourth where it cost £366.64. Ocado shoppers paid £386.84 on average for the larger shop in August.
Waitrose was a huge £49.48 more expensive than Asda, coming in last at £386.98 on average for the same trolley of goods. The latest Which? supermarket comparison comes as the cost of living crisis continues to put pressure on households.
Inflation hit a new 40-year high of 10.1% in the 12 months to July - with the Bank of England warning that it could hit 13% by October.
