Cheapest supermarket in March named as Lidl, Asda and three more grocers compared

Lidl has been named the cheapest supermarket to get a basket of shopping - beating rivals like Asda.

A basket of 33 common items cost £53.06 at Lidl last week, compared to £60.19 at Asda.

The same 33 goods would cost £63.26 at Sainsbury's, £64.55 at Tesco, £72.73 at Morrisons and £85.40 at Waitrose, The Grocer reports.

However, the Lidl basket of items still cost 4.5% more than a year ago, or an extra £2.31.

That is due to rising inflation, which is currently 5.5%.

Food prices are rising at near-record levels as the cost of living crisis bites, according to recent data.

Kantar, which records prices, said inflation in February was 4.3%, with prices rising fastest for savoury snacks, fresh beef, and cat food, while the cost of bacon, beer, lager, and spirits fell.

However, Lidl came second to last when it comes to service.

The discount supermarket got a score of 65/100 for this, only beaten by Morrisons on 58/100.

The top supermarket for service was Asda, with 85/100, then Waitrose (77/100), Tesco (75/100) and Sainsbury's (72/100).

The Grocer normally includes Aldi, Iceland, Amazon, M&S and Ocado in its price test, but did not this time.

Lidl was also voted the cheapest supermarket by consumer group Which? in its own rankings last month.

The monthly price test by Which? compared the cost of 23 essential goods including own-brands and items such as Hovis bread over the course of 28 days – to reveal the cheapest grocer that month.

It found that, on average, shoppers would have paid £24.21 at Lidl.

It beat rival discounter Aldi by just 62p. Meanwhile, the most expensive supermarket was £9.50 pricier than Lidl for an equivalent basket of groceries.

Groceries with some of the biggest price differences included PG Tips tea bags, which had a difference of £1.52 between Lidl and Waitrose, and own-label seedless grapes, which had a difference of £1.41.
