Chance meeting in Home Bargains changes the lives of four people from Merseyside

The Mysterines just landed their debut album 'Reeling' in the UK top ten, but none of this could have happened without Home Bargains, a jacket, and just a little bit of luck.

The four-piece hail from Wirral and Liverpool and comprise of lead singer Lia Metcalfe, bassist George Favager, guitarist Callum Thompson and drummer Paul Crilly. The band's success would not have happened without a chance meeting in a Home Bargains in 2014 between Lia and George.

Speaking to the ECHO Lia said: "I think I saw him once before in a park, but when I saw him in the store I just had this feeling. He was wearing a cool jacket and I just thought there's definitely no way he is wearing a jacket that cool and isn't into music. It was all based on the jacket really."

After meeting Callum and Paul at a gig in 2018 the band was formed. Lia said: "That was fate as well, I was at the gig and couldn't get served and the guys offered to buy me a drink and it just so happened that I was looking for a new guitarist and drummer."

Their debut album has been well received by the music industry and with 'Reeling' finding its way into the UK top ten. Speaking on the band's meteoric rise Lia said: "The response has been unbelievable really and I wasn't really expecting it to get this sort of reaction from people and its just great to know that everyone is loving the record. It has been pretty overwhelming."

The band has already brushed shoulders with some of the UK's top musicians, Paul Weller is a fan of the band and they have been on tour with Miles Kane, Lia said: "When we were on tour with Miles I was only 17. I got to meet Example and his girlfriend and she kept asking me where my mum was and when she was coming to pick me up because she thought we were too young. So that was pretty funny."

Speaking on what she hopes the future holds for the band she said: "We are on tour now and just want to keep making music, but I think we are happy with being at number nine for now."
